Which brand of cat food do you give your diabetic cat?

I understand what you mean. And the DM (you mean DM not MD, right?) formula isn't liked by most cats.

I feed ours Royal Canin Siamese 38, it's a high protein (38%) low carb dry food. Costs $11 for a bag that lasts my 15 pounder a whole month. He also gets a quarter of a can of 9-Lives Super Supper (the 6 ounce can) since that's their lowest carb food.

EVO is very good BUT it's $17 for a bag (which will last two months) and it's 50% protien which will cause diahrhea in a lot of cats so it needs to be cut with another food to not cause problems. They'll also gain weight on this, so if you need weight put on, it's a good one.

I supplement with as much baked chicken (no bones, skin or deep frying) as he wants once a week, and we share a can of mackeral with all 5 of the cats once every two weeks (good for the oils).

You need low carb but high protien. I've got some sites bookmarked that will show a comparison of some of the main ones on the market.

There's also a couple of good diabetic cat boards on Yahoogroups that you can join and ask questions at.

Diabetic Cat Food Brands

I have a diabetic cat. She's been diagnosed for about 4 years now.

I have to buy her food from the vet - they say that's the only "safe" food for a diabetic cat. Being that they have to be on special food, just like a person with diabetes.

If I'm right, your cat is on the Hill's Science DM formula - not the MD? Because as someone mentioned there was a recall on the MD formulas a few months back. So I'm hoping you just got that backwards when you wrote your question.

I also have to give my cat injections every day.

Do you have to give your cat insulin?

If so, then you really do need to stick with the proper diet or the cat can die from it.

I know it's expensive, but actually when I look at the price of it and then all the treats I used to buy her, it didn't make a big difference. I was just glad that there was something I could do to keep her alive :)

The best things for your cat are going to be the most expensive. Esp. because your cat is diabetic. HIlls MD also has a dry formula which might last longer then the canned if you buy say a 10lb bag. Also, Purina makes a food for diabetic animals, ask your veterinarian about it as it is prescription and will have to be approved by a veterinarian. If they don't carry it in stock ask if they can prescribe it through a pharmacy called VetCentric which can send it directly to your door. The veterinary hospital I work at works with them a lot and its owned by a veterinarian so everything is going to be exactly what it says on the label unlike PetMeds.

I have a diabetic cat and she eats Special Kitty canned cat food mixed with a little bit of dry Special Kitty cat food.

First off there was a recall on that food around the begining of April 07. But thats besides the question/point.A great thing you shoud probably do/try is talking to your or a local vet about good food for your cat.Usually they sell great tasting cat food that isnt a lot of money,but if not then they can provide you with some good foods.GOOD LUCK.

REMEMBER if worse comes to worse just stick with the cat food you are now using.
