Would if be a faux pax to wear a sari?

I am a western gal and about as white as white can be (no mistaking me for an Indian). I think that saris and punjabis are some of the most elegant clothing there is. But would it be a huge faux pas or insulting to Indians to wear them? Are they associated with any religious intention I should know about? Unfortunately I don't have any Indian friends to ask.

Hi, I think it is great that you are interested in wearing a sari/ a salwar-suit or salwar-kameez (punjabi). No ofcourse it wont be insulting for Indians if you wear those. It's a free country and anyone is free to wear the dress of any country. Infact, the open-minded ones will look at you with appreciation. Yes, you will get stares of wonder and inquisitiveness but take that in a good way and with a pinch of salt. The salwar-suit is more practical I feel and you can wear them more often. The sari would need some getting used to. I don't see even Indians wearing that often except for special occassions (unless they are of an older generation - homemakers..and are used to wearing that traditionally at home everyday)...but the sari is one of the most unique and sexiest of clothings for a woman. All indian women I have met have a special place for that in their heart and hold the garment as very dear. Select a color to match your skin tone! :). Dressy sandals with heels go very well both with the sari as well as the salwar-suit. If you want to be more practical, you could buy decorative ethnic looking pump (flats, no heels) for the latter.

    Have fun!

No. anyone can wear a sari, and they are made from some of the most gorgeous cottons and silks that you will ever see. My niece brought back some royal blue sari silk woven with gold thread last year to make a party outfit.

No, it depends on the person though. I find it really interesting that you are interested in wearing saris. I appreciate you respecting our culture and liking our clothes. We don't see that very often. And, don't worry if anyone says anything. I support you 100 percent.

I'm sure many Indian people would be flatted you are acknowledging their cultural heritage.Wearing a sari doesn't hold any religious connotations so nobody will be offended.Go for it I bet you'll look great!
