I have a seven month old Bull Mastiff who has developed loose stools. How can I help him?

I have wormed him and changed his food. I was feeding him Iams puppy and have changed to Canidae. I was thinking it could be parasites in the well water but the other two dogs (a long haired Chihuahua and a miniture Dachshund) don't have the same problem. We need to get past this as we live at the 3500 foot elevation and staying outside isn't an option. He was house broken but I believe the loose stools are the cause of the accidents. He'll go outside if we leave the sliding glass door open but as I said that's not an option in the winter.

canidae has alot of fillers in it- the main cause of loose, runny, or a massive amount of stool. id recomend switching over to a better food that contains no soy, no corn, no beef, no wheat, no byproducts, no artificial preservatives, and no dies. it also should have a meat meal as the first ingredient and the more natural and organic the better. I recomend to my clients Eagle Pack Holistic Select Duck and Oatmeal formula or the Anchovy, Sardine, and Salmon meal Formula. other great brands are innova and wellness but theyll cost you a pretty penny. once you switch him over to a better food ( do 75% old and 25% new for 1 day then 50-50 than 75% new then 25% then 100% the new stuff.... with eagle pack their is digestive enzymes in their product so you can switch them faster) for five days do not let him eat anything else besides that food! if the problem consists after the 5 day period id recomend you get a bottle of eagle pack holistic solution powder and mix that into your dogs food. it jammed packed with digestive enzymes and aids miraculously in digestive care.

Have a stool sample checked by a vet. or a vet. tech. to check for parasites. If the food change was made recently then that could be the cause of the loose stool. There are other possibilities such as parvo that could cause him even greater problems if not treated soon. It could also be a food allergy. If nothing else works you could change him to a lamb and rice formula. Your vet could give you some tablets such as Endosorb or Amforol that help to dry up loose stools.

How long has ot been happening? Loose stools can happen for quite some time in some dogs after a food switch, especially to better foods since they contain less constipating fillers.

If it doesn't go away, talk to the vet to see if there is something you can give him to help firm it up.

Anytime that you change a pet's diet it will get runny stool no matter how expensive the food. Keep it on a strict dry food diet for at least 3 weeks. I prefer Purina dog chow it gives a beautiful shiny coat in addition to nutrients. After that give soft foods only occasionally as a treat.

my dogs got the same thing. take away his food. make rice, or go to a chinese restraunt cheap and easy. cool it completly, mix it with a little bit of chunk chicken in water canned, and put some extra water in it. you need to do this for at least 3 day to get him better. slowly add his food back into his diet, and make sure hes drinking water. also you can freeze low sodium chicken broth in ice cube trays, and give him one outside to get him hydrated. the most common cause of this is actually dehydration. i have consulted many vets and spent hundreds of dollars to find out its only dehyration. try these and never keep him outside, his stool will firm up, just give it a couple days. good luck

He might be like this because you changed the food too fast. If so, it will correct itself. If you didn't change the food fast, you may need to take him to the vet. He might be having some stomach/intestinal trouble.

first talk to your vet if u havent. now, cook him porridge and mix it with a little of dog food, boiled chicken breast, and maybe a spoon or two of cottage cheese. this should let your bull mastiff's intestines rest a little and give it the need nutrients. good luck!
