In the hobbit it tells of how the ring came about and how bilbo baggins got it.
but as a prelude to the lord of the rings how does the film say it came about?

In the movie, they begin with the part where Gollum takes it from the 1st person over the lake, I don't exactly remember but you would considering you are reading the book now.
Then they show the entire 'my precious' thing and Bilbo Baggins taking it from him, who then gives the ring to Frodo on the insistance of Gandalf after his birthday party.
By the way, 'The Hobbit' is a really good book and far better than the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy. Their movies are good but not the books that much.

It tells you that there were 9 other rings made and that this ring had more powers than the others, it also tells you that it was cut of the finger of someone (i forget his name) by the kings son he lost it in a lake along with his life and many years later Smeagol fond it in the lake and had it for over 500 years until bilbo baggings found it one day and gave it to frodo on the night he had a party because he was going off on his adventure.

If you liked reading the Hobbit I would recommend the BBC audio plays of Lord Of The Rings over the films. The films omit and change large sections of the plot. I was bitterly disappointed with the films. To be fair the first of the three films was very good however the second one saw a sharp and exponential decline in quality where Peter Jackson added extra cheesy action scenes, farcical joke scenes and additional CGI creations at the expense of characterisation and vital plot elements.

The hobbit is brilliant, however I was very dissapointed when i read the lord of the rings infact i only got half way thru the first book and had to stop, as it was so boring. Thats the first bokk that i haven't read all the way thru, usually if i get a boring one, i have to read to the end anyway, just in case it gets better, but LOR i couldn't.

they say that Isilder (who defeated Sauron by chopping off his finger with the One Ring on it) took the ring and the Elf King told him to throw the ring into Mount Doom but Isilder says no and he takes the ring with him until someone murders him and the ring fell into a river and stayed there for 2 and a half thousand years till Smeagol's mate finds it and Smeagol wants it and murders his mate, takes the ring and lives in the Misty Mountains with it.
Then Bilbo comes along, when he is on an adventure with Gandalf and the Dwarfes to fight the Dragon and take the treasure and Bilbo beats Gollem (or Smeagol) in a Riddle game and Bilbo took the ring and had it until he went to stay with the Elves in Rivendall and left the ring to Frodo.
hope this helps.

At the beginning of the film Bilbo still has the ring. He gives it to his nephew Frodo who with the rest of the Fellowship of The Ring start the journey to return the ring to the crack of doom and thus destroy the power of Sauron.

At the beginning gollum drops the ring and bilbo finds it...bilbo becomes obsessed with the ring and eventually he gives the ring to frodo!
