Amost all travel was by foot along pathways. Only the very wealthy had horses or carriages. People rarely ventured more than a few blocks from their hut or farm... unless you were a soldier. They really had no place to go. The daily routine was sleep, eat. work, eat, sleep. So, streets as we know them really did not exist until horse and carriage was more common for the common man . Then they were made with stone or hay was thrown down to keep horses from getting mired in mud.
