Windows 98 won't recognize my external memory port?

It is detected when I plugged it in initially, but then it says it can't detect a driver and it's highlighted in yellow labled unkown. Yet the properties say the device is working fine. I installed all the windows updates available. What could be the problem? Anything would really really help.

Because there are no drivers for your external memory device, and Microsoft no longer supports Windows 98.

I have the same problem I have a portable memory stick that Windows 98 (on an old laptop) can recognize, but it can't access or use it.

the driver you have probably wasn't designed for windows 98. You really should upgrade to xp.

uninstall or rather remove the device then reboot the machine, it should reinstall just fine
