Should immigrants be granted citizenship?

Absolutely, every legal immigrant should get access to an application for citizenship. Legal immigrants pay taxes, send their kids to school and have fought hard to live in a country that sometimes refuses to totally accept them (by putting them in the same bag as illegals). If they are genuine and want to be integrated, then yes citizenship is the last stepping stone to it :)

Legals should have the right, they pay taxes have jobs, came to the States the right way! illegals no should not have the rights to become citizens, you say about them being here and if they commit 'no crimes', but they already have broken the law, when they entered the States. They showed no value no respect for the law of the land when they entered the US.

Why should they have the same rights as someone who has followed the laws and rules, to gain entry into this country be on the same level as someone who just hoped on a plane or over a fence.

Jonathan, I understand that the misery of poverty for one family is probably the same as for all impoverished families. The deeper the poverty, the harsher the pain. And, there are countries with poverty levels much deeper than can be found on these two continents.

All told, some 4 billion people live in that misery. The question always arises: if we can't let all 4 billion in, who do we admit and how do we choose them?

We who are pro-justice and pro-(legal)immigration have a reason to insist on choosing those who've followed the law: because nothing else is so clearly fair or just to all concerned.

All the poor are, of course, poor.

All will work very hard for a better life.

All risk disease and starvation unless they're admitted to come.

All are equally tempted to cut in line.

But do they all realize that admitting the entire 4 billion would only destroy the hopes of every potential immigrant?

It would also destroy the one nation on Earth that managed to build so great a dream, so sustainably.

Well, I agree, Illegal immigrants should only be given a chance to citizenship if they have not commited a crime. Of course, since their illegal immigrants, by definition, they already commited a crime and have proven not worthy for citizenship.

I don't understand why we should give illegal immigrants a chance to be citizens. I might be coaxed to believe in giving them an opportunity to stay here, since some do come in order to survive, but thats even a small percentage. If they are here to survive, the right to vote is not necessary for them to survive. It's not even necessary to thrive. I asked the question why we should give them the right to vote, and the best answer I got is, "Why not". They broke our law, and they need to be punished. I don't think, never being able to vote is too harsh of a punishment. I won't argue there might be some reason to let them stay here, but they don't need to be a citizen to do that.

If he or she has come into this country illegally, then what you say about time is irrelevant. Millions of folk cannot unlawfully move to Colombia then tell them to overlook the fact that they are there simply because they have been there for a few years. Usa la cabeza!

Until you and persons like you come to terms with the word "illegals", there will always be a problem!

I can't agree with illegal immigration. Of course legal immigrants who do everything the right way CAN be granted citizenship, not SHOULD.

Immigrants become citizens all the time. It's a process called naturalization, with which you are familiar.

Quick fact about illegal immigrants: Every single member of that demographic has broken the law. Not many groups can say that, and I don't think any group of that size can make that claim.

Yes, legal immigrants should have a path to citizenship.

That path should be reserved only for legal immigrants, and never an option for illegal aliens. If any further anmesty's are given, citizenship should be precluded and only resident alien status granted at best.

Citizenship should be a reward for coming here legally and contributing to our nation.

Some immigrants are granted citizenship. You should have to pay for it(the process) but above and beyond that, you should not be allowed to break laws (here or in the country of origin) and it should not be granted quickly. 5 years is probably fine.

Being an illegal alien means the person has already broken a federal law, and not only should he/she NOT be granted citizenship, he/she should be in JAIL and sent home, with NO chance of ever returning. We've got enough criminals here already, why would we go out of our way to make even MORE into citizens??

i would tell any one on this subject that the problem start with who should or should not become legal...some are good and some are bad ,but who will decide so i think the question is really who will decide who should be here legallly
