hazard lights right or wrong?
ok i've had plenty debates with my husband and his family about this when it pours down raining and you are on a highway do you think it's ok to turn on your hazard lights or emergency lights and drive with them. i thought it was against the law to drive so far with them w/o pulling off the road for repair but they seem to think that it helps people see them and well it annoys me and actually is more of a distraction. so my question is should you turn on your hazard lights when driving in bad weather and is having them on right or wrong?
i realize that some people have trouble seeing in the rain and visibility is low but isn't it obvious that people would slow down adn wouldn't it make people think there was a problem or wreck and make them break. if they have trouble seeing then why don't they pull off the road til they feel comfortable. i know sometimes you have to be in it or you are already out when it starts but why do people insist on putting them on

I don't know if it is illigeal, but I woundn't know what the driver with the 4 way flashers was trying to do, pull off the road, trying to come back onto the road. If it is raining so hard that you are having difficulty driving, then pull off and wait until it lets up enough that you feel confortable operating the car

What is the big deal, it's your car and your lights... the general purpose is to alert other's to pass around you because you are having car problems or the opposite that you are having an emergency and get out of the way! If the weather is bad, everyone else on the road know's that so why would you feel you were different? How can it help you drive in the rain? It would be more of a distraction, think about it.. if everyone put on their blinkers when it poured, that would be really obnoxious, but you said that already so why are you asking?

1st, to my knowledge it is not illegal anywhere in the U.S. to have your 4 way flashers on while moving!
2nd, in most states if you are doing between 20-25 below the posted limit you are required to use your flashers because not everyone will drop them speed to match yours & in the event of VERY heavy rain, snow or dust storms (& also very heavy fog) visabilty is reduced often to less than 50 feet. In these cases even 15 mph difference in speed from a vehicle overtaking you could be disasterous! Yes everyone should slow down in these events but it is not the speed that creates the problem but variance in speed. Slowing to much without using your flashers IS what causes chain reaction crashes. Using the 15 mph difference that only takes 1 car traveling 40 mph & 1 traveling 25 mph to set it off. If you do not feel safe continue to the 1st SAFE place to get off the highway. Only stop in the emergency lane for an emergency! If you are unable to see what lane you are driving in, the traffic behind you will have the same trouble!

It all depends on the severity of the weather. If the weather is really bad and visibility isn't that good having your hazards on can be helpful. I wouldn't say you have the hazards on because when your lights are on other people can see you. Also if the weather is that bad driver's wouldn't drive that fast anyway (well they shouldn't) and they will have time to see you up ahead.

Its important to have your hazards lights on while driving when the weather is terrible.
I remeber last month the rain was so bad, all cars were driving slow however, I could barely see the car in front of me.but because he has his hazard lights on, I saw his car and slowed down even more, which was to my luck because he was at a complete stop.
now imagine if he didnt have his hazards on, I would have probably have hit him. the storm was terrible. rain everywhere and it was dark so youcould not really see the car in from of you.
the good news is that that terrible storm really cleaned my car!
Update: on your details, the weather was passing through so it's kind of hard to see or pull over for that matter. the cars just simply slowed down and then moved faster when it cleared.
In America its perfectly legal and encouraged to have your hazards on

If the weather has turned very bad and visibility is reduced, and traffic is moving much slower than normal... by all means... turn on your hazards... it helps alert any traffic coming up behind you that everyone has slowed down in that area. It just might save you from being rear-ended by someone zipping along and not paying attention... and there are lots that do that !

If you are not stationary or very close to, then using your hazard lights is illegal.
It doesn't matter how inclement the weather is, it does not give you the right to break the law.
All you are doing is preventing people from seeing your indicators.
If you are driveing in cr*p weather with severly reduced visibility, turn on the rear fogs, that is what they are for.

the only circumstance where I think you can use them while driving in weather is if the weather is so bad you feel necessary to slow way down, slower than the posted limits to make drivers aware of your predicament - however, if its that bad you have to slow down and turn them on, what are you doing out in that weather in the first place? - in general you should never drive with them on - best advice is to call your local dmv and also ask them cuz laws can be different in your region

If you are dumb enough to continue driving when you know that visibility is so bad that the people behind you might have trouble seeing you, then yes turn on the hazards

If its not safe to drive, don't drive, even with your hazards on. The hazards should be used when pulled on the shoulder, such as fixing a flat tire.
