How can I shoot a rifle if my dominant hand is my right, and my dominant eye is my left?
I went to the range for the first time the other day to shoot some targets with my friend, grabbed a rifle and started shooting........at nothing but the frontside of the mountain!! I just couldn't shoot a dang target but I could have sworn that the sights were exactly lined up with the targets!! So I went home and read up on some stuff and noticed that usualy your dominant eye is the same side as your dominant hand. So i did an experiment and found out my dominant eye is on the opposite side.(Left eye, but right handed) So how do I go about shooting? I tried using my right eye the other day and I didn't feel comfortable and felt "shaky". Any suggestions? Anything would help thanks.

My wife had the same problem that you currently have, I taught her to shoot with her right eye with a little trick I learned while in the military. Go to a costume shop or similar store and buy a cheap .99 cent pirates eye patch and wear that when shooting, or even simpler you could put black electrical tape over the left lens of your safety glasses (which you should be wearing on the range anyways) It may take some getting used too but if take your time, get comfortable and slowly squeeze off the rounds, you should notice an improvement by the end of your shooting session. My wife shoots almost as good as me now that she isn't so awkward with the rifle.
Good luck!

When I have a student in my hunter safety classes that have this condition I take a piece of tape (magic tape will do it) and put the tape on the safety glass of the left eye. This causes the right eye to become the dominate eye (the brain decides this) and you can shoot from your normal right hand side.
In hunting situations you may want to practice shooting with your left hand and buy a rifle that will be easy to operate with the left hand such as a lever action. After enough practice at the range you will be able to take advantage of the normal dominate eye (which is usually better coordinated) because you use it more in every day things.
Being ambidexterous I have taught myself to shoot both left and right handed. It comes in handy in many situations in the field.

Which hand right or left is the key, with a rifle you shouldn't notice much of a difference shooting eye wise but learning to swap to southpaw for the mechanics of it would be very difficult. Most people have no idea which eye is dominate and they shoot just fine.

Most hunters/shooters are comfortable with either hand, and practice using both. The only deterrent to alternate shooting is when you have to shoot quick, as in rabbit or quail hunting, then it is pretty awkward, unless you have become accomplished using both. To find which eye is truly dominant, point both index fingers upward at eye level, one about a foot away, and the other at arm`s length, with BOTH eyes open, and line them up (as if it were a rifle sight). Now, close one eye at a time(one will move off). The eye that stays on line is your dominate eye. Set your sights on your rifle using this eye. and practice shooting whichever arm you have to use. I used to have a dominant right eye, but as I got older, my right eye got weaker, and dominance switched to my left eye I went to an optometrist about this, and he said it happens frequently.

I'm glad I don't have that problem, but I've coached a couple of family members through it with good results. The easy way is just to get used to shooting right handed with your left eye shut. It's not natural, and there are good reasons people shoot with both eyes open, but it's a decent quick fix. The other and better is simply to learn to shoot southpaw, though most of us find that just too awkward. And then there's the way my grandmother used to shoot, right handed with the stock in the left shoulder, which is the most awkward thing I've ever seen. I can't recommend that, but she seldom missed a deliberate shot.

As a Lefty, Right eye dominant, for many years I shot right handed. In an industrial accident, I lost some use of my right eye, and dominance switched. I now shoot left handed.

try taking shooting glasses and putting some kind of tape over the left eye that you can still see light but not be able to focus. that way you will start training your right eye to be dominant you can do this at home too it really does work a pro taught me this trick . it is all about training the eye you want to be the dominant eye. try it what do you have to lose.

I have the same issue. I learned to shoot left handed, it didn't take that long to adapt. If you decide to try handguns, I am able to use either my left or right hand while sighting with my left eye, but that doesn't work with a rifle. Just keep practicing.

I'm right handed and left I dominant as well. You can either use an eye patch or a blinder on your left eye. Still keep your left eye open, your goal is to be able to shoot with both eyes open. It takes time and patience to retrain your non-dominant eye. You can gradually back off on using an eye patch or blinder. It took me about a year to train my right eye. My left eye is still dominant, but I can now use my right eye very effectively to sight a rifle.
The one advantage to my left eye dominence problem is that I can shoot my handguns equally well either right or left handed.

Well, i was like that. Im left handed but my right eye is dominant. I just got used to shooting right handed. Practice is all the advicce i can give you. I then started using bows and it was way harder to pull a 70 lb bow with my weaker right arm, and i couldnt hit anything with my left eye to i just sold my bow haha.
