Why do people feel the need to bash some countries! It really annoys me.......... I have been to Thailand and the people there are some of the friendliest, down to earth and humble that I have known. We had an amazing time and the weather was perfect. Bangkok was like any other city in the world, except people smile at you and are friendly. Would you get that kind of welcome in London? I think not.
We stayed in Krabi and loved it, the scenery is stunning and like nothing I had seen before. My brother has travelled extensively and says northern Thailand is the best, much less commercialised and again very welcoming.

i have been to thailand many, many times and i think RCrumb is painting a rather bad picture of bangkok. yeah, sure it's got its bad bits but hasn't any city?? london, manchester, birmingham.
if you want an untouched island, head for koh payam. you have to get a night bus to ranong then a boat out to the island.
payam has been known to the backpacker world for about 6 years or so and is still untouched by comercialism, unlike phukett, samui etc (don't go to these islands) next to payam is an even quieter island, koh chang, not to be confused with the big koh chang on the other side of thailand (also too comercial)
a lot of thailand is very comercial now but there are still lots of places to go that still hold the history of thailand and don't get too many tourists.
try to avoid reading lonely planet and rough guide too much, they are good for basic info but common sense and a sense of adventure are much better.
once you get out of the touristy areas you will find that the thai people are a truely fantastic bunch, the same can be said for laos also.
learn a bit of the language, " hello/goodbye, thank you, etc" and you will be appriciated.
good luck with your travels.

Yes,many times.I actually lived there for a couple of years.
What are you looking for?
I read RCrumb's answer and he/she seems a bit bitter.Maybe had a bad experience.Must admit I had one or two, partly my own fault, though.Wrong place at the wrong time and too much drink.Put it down to experience.
You can get practically whatever you want.A lot of the touristy places ARE too commercial, but there are still less frequented places to go.
I am not bitter.I met and married my lovely wife there in Isan region(N.East,Khon Kaen).
Generally speaking the people are warm and helpful.
You can get bad ones in any city in any country.
Look on the internet to pick where you want to go.

As much as people here can answer your question - which is great, all you need to do is to do internet search on Thialand.
There are lots and lots and lots of websites and resources which will tell you about Thailand and give you photos of various places.
A really good investment is to get the Lonely Planet Guide to Thailand. There are also many other good books too.

hi..i would recommend Bangkok for the first time it really nice and cheap thing to buy and it was a hot hot place, stay in Asia Bangkok hotel it cheaper , i always stay there whenever i go to Bangkok and have their foot message right under the sky train bridge ( a shop near Asia hotel for body message and foot message, their staff all wear purple colour uniform.)
get a map if are travelling by yourself, you and get the in fore map from their airport or sky train map will be more detail,it more cheap and more safe if you travel by sky train in Bangkok.
go to cha to chat on weekend only, you can find alot alot of tourist like to go there for buying cheap thing like ..cloths,shoes and many more or go to MBK for watching movie and some cheap thing to buy and it was a air-con shopping mall more comfortable.
for phuket it only water sport place if you like water sport it a MUST to go, check the weather before you go there, if it was their rainning season you can't play any of the water sport.. .
check internet for more bangkok detail if my answer cannot help you... happy holiday..

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder ...
Thailand's beauty lies in its people, in its nature, and in its wide range of offerings - you can do whatever you want (at least, if you can afford it).
So, the best place to go depends on your interests.

Thailand is indeed a beautiful country. The people are friendly too. Except in the south, it is very much safe to travel. So is Bangladesh!

It is a lovely country but full of really eco-illiterate and untrustworthy people who would sell their Grandma if they thought it would get them a BMW. If not them, then there are also too many gangsters and prostitutes with AIDS
What was once an idyllic city pearl of the orient, Bangkok, long ago filled in all their canals to make roads for their traffic jams...

Why go to Thailand?
I would recommend going to the Philippines and check out Boracay Island if you like pristine white sands and clear waters...and not that expensive as well. PLUS...no AIDS.
