Is it true contractions can go for days or weeks before labor?

I've been contracting for the last 25 hours, but haven't bothered to leave work or anything because they've been random in their timing (jumping around between 2 and 25 minutes).

I'll be at 38 weeks tomorrow, which I know is far enough along to have the baby, but it's also early enough that it makes me suspect I could be doing this for a while.

Any stories or insights to share? How much should I bother watching the clock?

Thanks

I had random contractions, just like you for 2 wks before I actually went into labor w/ my 2nd. I started a journal to keep track and that how I knew I was in labor, b/c though the contractions felt the same, the minutes started to be constant, 5mins apart, etc. On my way into the hospital, the car ride, I started to really feel those contractions, and I was 5cm when I was checked there. Everyone is different, you might notice a difference in the pain level of the contractions, but my point of view is the numbers don't lie. Good luck and congrats!

Your probably just experiencing an increase in braxton hicks which I have been having for about a week now (an increase at least) I've had them for a while. Nothing to worry about, your body is just getting ready! When they start getting like 5-7 mins apart and becoming more painful and all that then you should go in. Good Luck!

i had an easier labor because of it though only lasted a few hours

You know your body... you'll be able to tell the difference between Braxton Hicks and a REAL contraction. In the meantime, walk, walk, walk! Do anything to get that baby riled up enough to come out.

If your contractions are not regular than you are just having braxton hicks contractions. It is completely normal to have braxton hicks contractions through most of the third trimester and even sometimes in the second trimester.

I would stop working because I know you are uncomfortable. And yes they can go on for weeks or days before you go into labor. Or you can be in labor right now. Good luck though. I think you've jinxed me because now I'm having funny pains.

I had contractions for 11 days before my son was born... and then 21 hours of labor to boot! :)

i have been having contractions for the past 2 weeks with no regular pattern...saw my dr yesterday and had not even dialated more than 1 cm!!!!!!!!!!! as long as there is no regular pattern, it is nothing to worry about...the contractions get more regular and more painful now because of the babys size and position.

Yes, absolutely. They told me not to be concerned unless they become regular.
