, in our opinion, that venlafaxine should be considered as a second line antidepressant for resistant depression.
Caution should be used in the elderly, those at risk of CVAs or the hypertensive.
Withdrawal syndrome - sometimes severe and prolonged. Characterised by:
headaches
nausea
dizziness
mood lability
Gastrointestinal upset
recurrence of depression
bizarre dreams
paraesthesiae
auditory hallucinations
Nausea
Vomiting
Dizziness
Sexual dysfunction
Hypotension
Constipation
Sweating
Anxiety
Convulsions
Sleeplessness
Palpitations
Tremor
Abdominal pain
Rash
Hypertension
About 40% of patients taking venlafaxine suffer nausea and vomiting; thought to be dose related i.e. more severe with higher doses
