Has there ever been a pitcher that has batter higher than the 9th spot?

Yes. Occasionally a manager will put the pitcher in the eighth spot in the lineup, and put someone who gets on base a lot in the ninth spot. This way it's like having 2 leadoff hitters in a row, (one in the ninth spot, and another after him in the first spot) thereby doubling the chances to get on base for the guys hitting 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.

I can't tell you an example with the specific pitcher and game off the top of my head, but I know it has happened.

Rick Rhoden batted 7th as the DH for NY; this is from Wikipedia: Rhoden earned a reputation as an outstanding hitting pitcher. On June 11, 1988, he was the Yankees' starting designated hitter, going 0-1 with an RBI on a sacrifice fly. He batted 7th in the lineup, ahead of Rafael Santana and Joel Skinner. He was the first pitcher to start a game at DH since the AL's adoption of the DH rule in 1973. In his career, Rhoden batted .238 with 9 home runs and 75 RBI.

Rhoden's final game was September 29, 1989 for the Houston Astros.

in that case. it happens when a double switch takes place during a game. a pinch hitter bats for the pitcher, and is then substituted into the game for a position player, and the new pitcher who enters the game is placed in the old fielder spot in the batting order

so in these cases the pitcher does bat higher than the 9th spot

I know for a fact a pitcher this year batted in the 8th spot

A couple of seasons ago Tony Larussa of the Cardinals had his pitcher hitting in the 8th spot.

Yes, Rick Rhoden would sometimes bat 8th in the lineup.

Larussa had Todd Stottlemyre do it a few times, and Dontrelle Willis has done it as well, more recently (twice as high as seventh). But it's pretty rare.

it def. has happened. just cant remember who or when,, and tony larussa and his crazy out-of-the-box thinking ways would be a good guess on who did it

well yeah babe ruth did...but actually mike hampton if you remember him did it several times and they used him all the time for pinch hitting. one of the best hitting pitchers ever.

Yeah I've seen it a couple of times. I forgot who it was but he batted 8th.
