Are guard dogs so potentially dangerous that residents are actually LESS safe for having them?

Another man has died as a result of a dog attack at somebody's home (yes, he knew the dogs). Dogs often attack innocent passerbys, children and even the owners themselves. I wonder if owning guard dogs is actually more dangerous than the possibility of encountering an intruder. Does anybody have a link to statistical information?

You sound like you have an anti-dog agenda.

"ANOTHER man has died..." "Dogs OFTEN attack..."

When dogs are used by aggressive people for aggressive purposes, the dogs will always lose - and once in awhile the people who programmed and exploited them will get hurt too.

well your question is a bit odd as this is the man that was actually paid to look after Ving Rhyme's dogs, so in effect I think the dogs would have viewed him as their leader........why they attacked is beyond me................and surely any dog in side a home or on the premises is considered a guard dog?

Mine is sleeping on the futon as I type and is probably not going to move until I do and then will curl up in the next room but should the door open or something like that she is instantly awake and alert ready to defend HER territory.

Am very glad that for a change the dogs that appear to be responsible for this attack are NOT pit bulls....so maybe the focus will move onto another breed of dog for a while. IMO ANY dog can be dangerous but most of it is how you bring them up.

I am constantly amazed at people who own dogs who are clueless about them....never mind people who never had one. I constantly hear things like, "but they are wagging their tails". There are different tail wags and some tail wagging is done right before an attack. To me... I have had dogs most of my life, their body language is easy to read but I find a lot of people bother their dog and crate them and make their lives so boring that I don't know why millions more haven't snapped. I see men especially with the "macho" breeds of dogs aggravating them to the point that these dogs are like a time bomb waiting for a chance to attack. I see children trying to copy their parents behavior in how the dog is treated and a dog knows that they can "take" the child and will attack them when they wouldn't attack the adult. I see it everyday with my own dogs. Someone asked me one time if my dog bit and I said no, he pounced on my dog and picked her up with a swooping motion. I thought he was going to pet her. Many dogs will bite if a stranger tries to pick them up. I am very careful now.....my dog didn't bite but I got lucky that time. People are clueless around dogs.
