It was poppies, not puppies. And the witch cast a spell on them to make them sleep.

they were POPPIES and the wicked witch used a spell on the poppies to make Dorothy and the gang fall asleep as they skipped through.

They were POPPIES, silly (as if you did not know!), and the witch did NOT cast a spell -- opium is derived from poppies and their natural opiate caused the mammals to falter and need a time out.
