Should the internet be censored to stop illegal activity. eg child pornography, terrorist activity etc.

Yes it probably should. Deciding on the boundaries and creating an organisation to police it would be very difficult indeed though.

Personally, I don't believe in censorship for any form of media.
If a film is made which contains illegal material, the company making/distributing it and the director should be prosecuted.
It's the old case of if you don't like it, turn it off. It's amazing how many people write to complain about watching (on TV and the internet) an hour of "Porn", when all they needed to do was watch something else instead.
BTW, what's the difference between an "Independence Movement" that uses violence and a Terrorist Organisation?
The IRA considered itself the former, while most of the UK and some Irish "knew" it was the latter.

The gov't has no right or reason to censor the internet. Individual companies can police their own forums and servers for things they are in disagreement with. Parents can keep their kids from visiting offensive material. Nothing more is necessary-at this point it all comes down to personal responsibility, we dont need the gov't taking that away in any more areas.

Hello Fred,
This whole wide world has waited hundreds of years for an organ in which we are free to research our wants and needs in the same world, and there are so very many experts and advisors out there to help in our research, so my answer is no, the internet most definitely must not be censored, it is our right to use it for the reasons we buy it for that usage...There are ways for you personally to block any unwanted stuff from arriving on your monitor, so if you personally newed to censor your own computer uptake and intake, then by all means get it installed and lets keep the children of this world safe, from corruptions, and harm..Tony M

No, it should not be censored, as it is a global entity, and canoot be regulated by any one nations rules overall.
Each country needs to decide how to allow/disallow use of the internet, and then police it accordingly.
Unfortunately, there really is no good way to decide what should be censored and what should not be.
What you may call porn, I may call art.
There are obvious exceptions to this rule, but who would actually decide what to censor?

The internet is censored. If a website containing illegal material appears then the authorities in the country it originates from (if the site is illegal in that country) will usually close it down.
The only problem is the sheer size and complexity of the internet.

i guess you think our phone should be tapped as well,or maybe we should be told how to vote. lets not forget about the way we think, talk, who you talk to,what company you keep. last i checked i still live in the U.S.A.. lets get something strait and not forget about the people that died for these rights, the 4th of July. we still have some of those rights, but if some of the people "in charge" have there way. the "BILL of RIGHTS" will read "BILL OF THE WAY we THINK YOU SHOULD THINK AND SAY". we have police, f.b.i., to do this type of stuff. they are pretty good at doing what they do . do i like the things you are talking about ? HELL no. but lets get the "bad guys" and not punish the rest of us

Ahh, but does your definition of censorship match what everyone elses is ... that is the real question!

Of course it shouldn't.
Where would it stop?
