Hebron is the second most holy place to the Jewish people. What about its Jewish Quarter?

From the year 1540 until 1929, Jews lived on a large plot of land in Hevron, commonly known as the Jewish Quarter. It was purchased by Rabbi Malkiel Ashkenazai, a refugee from the Spanish expulsion in 1492.

In 1807, Haim Bajaio purchased, on behalf of the Hebron Jewish community, a five dunam plot of land adjacent to the centuries old Jewish Quarter, for '1,200 grushim'. The deal was witnessed and signed by no less than 22 Hebron Arab notables. This property served Hebron's Jewish community and later accommodated the home and synagogue of Hebron Chief Rabbi Eliyahu Manni.

Following the Jordanian occupation of Hebron in 1948, the entire Jewish Quarter, founded by Spanish-Jewish exiles in 1540, was razed to the ground. Among the structures destroyed was the ancient Avraham Avinu synagogue. In the early 1960s, an Arab fruit and vegetable market was constructed on the property bought by the Hebron community in 1807.

Palestinians cannot "claim" anything. They are a bunch of nobodies and should be treated as such.

They can start claiming when they organize under a single leadership, become a civilized community, stop murdering the innocent, stop their calls for Israel's destruction, stop murdering each other, but exercise law instead.

Jewish block in Hebron belongs to the Jews. Hebron is the second holiest place to Jews after Jerusalem, why is it being ignored by so many Jews? Why do you Jews don't realize that you are only provoking Arab violence by giving in and giving up what is supposed to be sacred to your entire nation? Why do you so easily give up something that your ancestors gave their lives for? What kind of devil is poisoning your soles?

Israel was attacked, it annexed enemy land. Period. Want to get that land back? Try. Otherwise STFU.

I disagree with those who say that reclaiming the Jewish Quarter of Hebron establishes a precedent. Obviously, 1948 was the slate cleaning; anything under Israeli control was Israeli and anything not was not. However, what diffrentiates the Jewish claim from the Palestinian one is that Israel now has the ability to reclaim land as it is once again in Israeli control. Jordan captured land from Israel and that would have been fine and dandy, but since that land fell again into Israeli control, an argument can be made for Israel to be able to reclaim it. This would not set any such precedent.

Don't forget the Hebron Massacre of 1929, and the surviving Jews who became refugees. They and their descendants deserve a right of return.

Technically you're right of course. There are many places that we should get back from the Palistinians. But unfortunately it's just not practical right now. There are some Jewish families who buy houses (from arabs) in areas occupied by arabs - in the Muslim courter in Jerusalem, and the Silwan valley in East Jerusalem as well - so maybe slowly slowly we will return to what is rightfully ours.

But Joe the man has a strong point to what he says as well.

There are many Jewish Quarters in the world starting from Iraq to new York. But each Jewish Quarter is part of national sovereignty of other states. Hebron is a Palestinian city ask D. Youns Amer.

the problem it creates is that if israel claims ownership of properties that belonged to jews before 1948, it opens a precedent where the palestinians can claim properties that belonged to arabs before 1948 in pre 1967 israel and that will add to the mess.

Joe is right - this will only complicate things - there are many things Israelis could claim - peace is the main objective here.

    Good Luck!!!

It will be returned to the Jews when the Palestian "refugees" are resettled in Arab lands. LOL

At present the liberal bastards kadima has evacuated the brave representatives of God and justice to make room for the degenerate group of half-breeds, the paleSIMIANS. Another land grab attempt for "palestine". this is ridiculous, I thought we supported Israel, we are in a war against terror together after all.
