In Christian art, Mary is almost always depicted wearing either a blue sash or an entirely blue garment. Why is this so?

Blue, like purple, is a symbol or royalty. Mary was the mother of the King of the Universe. One cannot become more royal than that.

Well, the color is actually known as "royal blue." Blue is the divine color. Represents the sky, and the sky, itself, was always thought of as the most beautiful thing in nature. And no matter where one is in the world the sky is the most dominate color that one sees. Even today most people, religious or not view the sky as divine, and beautiful.

The first thing that most people do everyday is look up to the sky. Because the sky defines the weather and a cloudless sky, defines a beautiful day. And the sky represents heaven to many.

  • Might be because 'blue' was very costly before paints based on modern dyes emerged in the 19C (some of it lapis lazuli based I think). Hence it might have been a compliment towards her status. Most religious art in Europe was done by catholics, I think, and they do have a very high opinion of Mary.

I think it has something to do with the popular blue dye they had at the time. Nowadays we have dye of every color, but then they only had so much natural stuff to work with.

The color blue is an allegory of her purity and virginity. It also signifies peace, which most people ask from her.
