Pregnant and teaching school?
I am a junior high math teacher, and school starts in a week and a half. I've been sick on and off for the last few weeks (about 8 weeks pregnant). I've found that the more I stand and do things, the more likely I am to get sick. When I teach, I am CONSTANTLY on my feet. I just wondered if any of you have any tips on how I can be a good teacher and not be sick all the time because of the pregnancy?
Thanks in advance!

I used a bar stool a lot when I was at the front of the room. I also stopped walking around the room to answer questions and had the students walk back to my desk for help. Under my desk, I had a foot stool to elevate my feet when I was able to sit. I wore really ugly comfy big shoes to help with the swelling that I always had by the end of the day. Then, I went home and wrapped my tootsies in a cold towel and put them up for the whole evening.
On the bright side, the kids will love watching your baby grow and ask so many fun questions and be so excited for you. I loved it!

I found that when I was pregnant, I'd think ahead of what I'd need so that I didn't have to move as much as before. I was a receptionist in a medical office and was up and down constantly. I would make an extra effort to actually plan what I needed and attempt to "schedule" my day as much as possible. I also was allowed to eat preggie-pops which were lolly pops with ingredients designed for pregnant women to help combat nausea. Or I'd drink some ginger tea since ginger helps to sooth an upset stomach. I have a really sensitive nose and I would have some lavender spray that I'd use in the area I was working in. If you want to try this, do it cautiously since certain smells (depending on the person) can add to your nausea instead of help it. It's best to try when you don't have to be somewhere and you can lie down right after if it doesn't have the desired effect.
I remember having a teacher in high school that was pregnant and she chose to shared that with us when school started. I think that it actually lifted the expectations in the classroom of having the "perfect" teacher (knowing that she didn't feel 100%) and I know I was a little more willing to help her do what ever she needed. If you are comfortable sharing that kind of personal information with your students then they might be a little easier on you as well.
Congratulations!
