Spiritual question?

how do you focus your mind to meditate without falling asleep, I feel that if I try to meditate then I will fall asleep, what is something that I can do to clear my head. I have been told that this can help to calm me, and I would like to try it, so where do I begin.

If you fall asleep then fall asleep. An easy ay to calm your mind is to focus on the movement of your stomach up and down or rather the breath. Just sit in a chair or do the lotus and place your hands in your lap and breathe. Don't sit too tall but just get relaxed in that position. If you start to feel sleepy try to note getting sleepy in your mind and if the feeling doesn't go away then lie down and continue meditation or get up and try again later. It's not so difficult really. The only thing one needs is a desire to be calm within and a willingness to try even when it feels you're getting nowhere with it. Soon you'll feel the difference.

Well i probably meditate differently than most people. When I'm meditating with God. I write down everything that's on my mind on one page and then on the next page I just talk to God.

I don't know if you believe in God but, if you do, this is a great thing to do. If you're writing you don't get distracted so easily.

I've heard another way of just writing everything down and then trying to meditate.

If you fall asleep sleep is what you need. Go with it and get enough sleep. When you do not need sleep then you will be able to pray or meditate.

I hate to tell you, but

it takes a bit of discipline at first.

You have to train your mind to

"shut off" the events of the day

and the many worries you have.

You just focus on clouds, or rain,

or the ocean, and think sweet

    thoughts about a good world

and a good God. You may find

a CD with ocean sounds may

help. Good luck! It's well worth

learning it. You can go to your

    "special place" of meditation

any time the world gets hectic

    and you need some peace.

Less food or too much food, tired, insufficient sleep, no relaxation of body & mind will make you asleep. Take care of your sitting posture. observe your breath while meditating.

obviously it is calming you if you are able to fall asleep. (you have managed to switch yourself off) which is something I often find hard to do. I think it is probably working for you, you must be 'clearing your head' and calming yourself to the point that you fall asleep. nothing wrong with that.

don't meditate when you are tired.

one way that i use when my mind is very cluttered with *stuff* is to focus on a candle flame and see its every detail, while breathing deeply. i can usually get pretty still and have great focus in a few minutes.

Self-discipline...........it is a skill that must be practiced, practiced and practiced some more. As you meditate more you will discover that your ability to meditate and focus will increase.

My dad told me to sit straight, cross your legs sitting down, put your hands on your knees, and concentrate on your breathing. He told me to inhale (slowly), hold your breath 10-15 seconds and breathe out through your mouth (slowly too) and inhale through your nose again. Hope this won't make you fall to sleep D:
