Help! How to free the neck of a castor. The joint to the table leg is stuck!-rust? treatment maybe?DW40 faild?

Hello People, I need some specialist help I think!!! hoping that some "very" "very" "kind soul" will come to my aid and the aid of my lame table... I recently swapped my huge pine kitchen/dining table for a smaller, older one with castors, all of which work fine, but one castor, though the actual castor runs freely, its 'neck joint' to the table leg is stuck fast.. I've tried DW40..but to no avail!! warrrrrrrrgh.. just thought of using a proprietary 'rust treatment' as can only imagine that it got wet over time and did not sufficiently dry out before rust set in.. SO- I seek help! Any other ideas.. pleeeeeeeeease!!!***

other than

replacing the 'complete/whole castor unit...which will mean trawling car boot sales & such.. to find a match - even if only in size - not style, which amounts to too much temptation...! or go for new ones..which I would like to avoid..... ( for the want of a nail-etc.,) Baited breath/heart in mouth - kicking in!!! Thanks !!!

Hello, most Castor wheels fit into a socket with a sprung washer holding them in. you will see at the base of the wheel bracket where they to meet, place a screw driver between and gentle lever up this will pull the stem out the socket clean the stem small amount of grease, replace this might need a slight tap to ensure the sprung washer fits inside the socket do not tap the wheel, but the base of the wheel bracket .

  • If you have tried turning the table upside-down without success and used wd40 I assume that the old castor is a metal one, turn it on it's side and wrap the offending castor in a piece of towelling cloth and por boiling water over this over a bowl [not the leg] this will have in effect make the metal spigot swell and break the joint. Manipulate carefully, don't burn yourself or the cat if it's nosey like mine is, purrfect!

Go to a home supply store such as Home depot and look for something called rust buster. Thats not the real name but everyone there should know what you mean. It a product that penetrates rust and corrosion and frees it up. The works a lot better than WD-40 when it frees up then us WD-40. Hope this helps

Have you tried turning the table upside down, giving it a good spray with wd40, let it soak in about 5 mins should do. Then turn the castor gently to the left and right to try and loosen it. You could use a spanner or a screwdriver for leverage.

WD40 sometimes collects dirt and is not as successful. Try Silicone spray it usually works better. You can buy it at auto parts stores if you can't find it at the hardware store.

A great rust treatment is a can of Coke. I can not explain why it works but the idea was suggested to me by a friend. Try it though - it really does work.

    Hope this helps.

Coca Cola will free anything. Turn the table upside down and let it soak in for a while. If need be use a pair of mole grips or pipe wrench to tease it loose.

    Good luck.

Get a claw hammer and another hammer. Place the claw of the hammer around the neck of the castor and hit the claw hammer upwards with the other hammer.

Good answers, but if ti were me I would like to think long term. Replace them and you will avoid early recurrence of the problem. Costs aren't that bad.
