Is this car worth it?

I am going to be buying my first car, and I found one for 1,500..but I had asked if he'd accept 1,300 since it is a '96, and he said yes. I was just wondering your opinion if this car is worth 1,300 or should I ask to lower the price even more?

The car is in the link below. Thanks

also, the car has 110,000 miles on it, and he claims there isn't anything wrong with the car.

Congratulations Kaylee--you are moving into another big part of life--it demands mature attitudes and adult responsibility--driving a car is a big job--not a game. You don't say what the car make is and the motor size or other details other than the year. You say it has 110,000 miles on it--that is about right for a car that is almost 12 years old. 10 thousand miles a year--the norm is up to 15 thousand so the mileage is about right. What I can ask you to do is take the car to a reliable mechanic your family recommends--not the owner of the car's friendly mechanic. Obviously the guy could lie. Check the motor for knocking sounds---odd noises--worn belts--worn tires--bad brakes--rusted exhaust system, --body damage repairs--broken window controls---make sure the wipers work properly, the lights and signals work properly--horn-----everything you can think to check--check it all. Have the mechanic smell the oil--and see if it looks BURNT. A good mechanic can tell the condition of the motor by sight and smell. the transmission is the same thing--sight and smell--ask if the owner has receipts for any work done over the years. Check the dealer for recall items that came over the years since manufacture--the dealer will have a computer record of the recall work being done. Drive the car onto the lift and have him look underneath real well--broken springs--worn shocks--worn rods and linkages---all these help control the car when you drive. Look for the wreck damage if the car was hit hard in an accident. Drive it--slam on the brakes and you should have NO sway or pulling to either side. It should stop straight and true--no brake pedal to the floor is acceptable. There is more to a car than a working radio--make sure the heater works and all the controls work--the air conditioner too. Seat belts work--headrests--seat adjustment back and forth. If all these things seem good--it is worth it--but things will break down eventually--so handle the car with pride and caution. Drive with all courtesy and respect--no speeding--no cell phone and driving--pay attention all around you--keep the car clean--wash the windows--pay attention to your speedometer. If this is not a good car--look at another the same way as this one.Easy on the gas pedal--and don't transport all your friends for free all the time--you did not buy a TAXI--if the unfortunate happens and you have a wreck--they can sue YOU for injuries.....and the friendship is GONE!! I want to wish you all the luck and happiness in the future.

You can't buy much of a car for $500. You sound a bit like you want to justify a newer car rather than get by. There is nothing wrong with wanting a new car, but financially it does not make sense to do so if you can get in good running order for $500. There should be another 75,000 to 100,000 in tha told Regal before you will need to junk it out.

Get the car inspected by someone certified or a reputable garage. Those cars were known for head gasket problems and the timing belt should be inspected. They are not the best small car on the market but if the price is right and it is in good shape they will get you by. The inspection might be $50 to $100 dollars but worth it to save you buying a lemon.

Forget all the crap everyone else says, the 2 most important things you can get from all the people's answers.. Carfax report, and get it checked out by a mechanic before you buy it. If the guy has a problem with either one of those, then its a lemon. That is all you need to know.

If the car is in good condition and took care of by the owner they usually last 1-5 years, sometimes 10 years. It probably worst it but you will have to buy a new one in 10 years.

it looks pretty good from the outside but you might want to get a mechanic to check it out

if there is nothing bad with it than you should probably take it, its your first car and you shouldnt get an expensive car

dont make the same mistake i did. for my first car i bought a car that was a little more expensive like in the $6000 and i totaled in a few months because i wasnt paying attention to the road and hit the car in from of me, and i was very careless in the road.. i know that you are probably telling your self that you are not going to be like that but believe me.. YOU ARE , i was the same way...lol

but you can always save some more money and get a better car once you get more experience on the road

hope this helps and enjoy your first car ; )

go to kelly blue book.com and appraise the car, find out what other cars of similar make model and options in your area are selling for, its worth it to buy the carfax report, take the car for a long test drive with the AC on the entire time to see if it over heats, its it passes all this then make an offer. remember you dont get something for nothing

the body of the car appears to be in good shape you need to ask questions like, does it smoke, can I have pictures of the engine, has it had any damage ie. wrecked or anything. does the AC work, are they manual or power windows. Has it had a recent overhaul. Maybe even get pictures of the tread on the tires and look for unusual wear (like if the tread is more worn on the inside or out side in the middle) as these could be signs of front or rear end problems.

He can claim whatever he wants. Remember you are buying a used car, and even if the engine falls out on the street in front of his house as you're driving it home, you have no recourse. There's no refund. When you buy a used car, you get exactly that - a used car and whatever problems come with it.
