My boss is retiring--now what?
My current boss is retiring at the end of September. I'm getting bits and pieces of info from people about the way things will be when she retires. I talked to my boss yesterday about my role after she retires and she really couldn't give me a straight answer. She basically said she was making reccomendations to her boss and he trusts those. The clincher is one of my coworkers that I'm not particularly fond of may be applying for my boss's position. I am up in arms about this. I don't know what to do. I also don't know if I should switch majors in college as I'm transferring this fall. I'm currently set for English which would help in my current job, but I'm interested in psychology and education. I can't apply for my boss's job because I don't have a four year degree. So it wouldn't do me any good to waste time with an English degree because it's going to take me awhile to get it and by then someone will have filled my boss's position. Help!!!!

you are worrying about something you have no control over. finish your college with the degree that will make you the happiest and do not switch just because of an opening in a firm you have a part time job in. good lucki

Just wait and see what comes about. Maybe your co-worker won't get the job, or maybe they will but they'll be willing to forget the past. If they get the job and you continue having problems with them you can start looking for a new job then but who knows if that will even happen (or if you don't think things will work out so well go ahead and start looking for a new job, no real downside to looking now).
As to your major, I'd advise just majoring in what you like the most. So, I'd switch to one of the ones you prefer - I mean even if things work out short term you may still be looking for a job down the way and at that point you'll be happy to have a mojor in the field you most enjoy.

I'm a nurse. Many times, many, many times in my career, bosses quit and the administration tells you that things will be the same jobs are secure etc.etc. The second the new boss comes in dramatic changes happen. Staff gets cut,new rules re;lunch time, drass code, overtime, double shifts and I could go on and on. Just either go with the flo or quit and find another job.Unfortunetly, thats the way it is. All administrations and bosses lie thru their crooked teeth. Thats why I decided to retire.

Let time decide and place all the pieces together. If you are really thinking about changing major, business administration would be good to get a managerial position. In some cases even if you did not finish school yet.

If you're not even out of college yet, then you don't have the qualifications for your bosses job probably. Either you put up with what happens or you find another job

you know i just changed jobs within my workplace. i am now going to be working for someone that just got hired in a few years ago and had a spat with me. she came up to me and welcomed me with welcomed arms. dont prejudge this new boss of yours. it may be a very good thing. people change when they get in authority. most normal people realize who the good workers are and change for the better. good luck.
