If you are new to home brewing, or looking for a gift, you're in the right place. To get started making your own beer at home you will need one of the Perfect Brewing Hardware Kits, and one or more of the ingredient kits below. You will also need (but is not included) a pot that will allow you to boil 2 or 3 gallons of water (the bigger the better), and enough beer bottles for 5 gallons (about 54 if they are 12 oz. each). The bottles should not be twist top. Everything in the hardware kit is reusable.

With a fermenter that won't seal, your beer can become contaminated. I recommend the Home Brewery. They have everything you need. You can start out with a kit (they have a ton) and then once you get comfortable with the process you can just buy the raw (and fresh) ingredients from them and make your own brew. The only downside that my husband and I have found is that you need to be able to store A LOT of beer if you go with the kits. Each kit makes about 5 gallons of beer.

First, check out the homebrewers section at www.beertown.org (the American Homebrewers Association/Association of Brewers website). Locate a homebrew shop in your area and check out their wares. The advantage to working with your local shop: there is usually a local homebrew club that meets there. They can help you through the process of learning to make great beer. If you just get a random kit online, you'll have to tough it out yourself. Those kits make it fairly easy to make something drinkable resembling beer, but if you want to get good at making world-class beer, you'll need some mentoring.
