What would be the best birthday gift to give a blind person?

Update:

This is a friend and she will be 80 years old. She turned blind at age 65. Her son invited me and another friend along with the family because we often go and guide her when she wants to go some place. Thank you very much. These details might give you a better idea about the person. We are all going to celebrate in a Chinese Buffet and Dance place for the occasion.

The best gift will be to stop thinking about a blind person as such "blind" think about this person as any other friend or relative, what will you give to a person that loves music? or to a person that loves books? when you stop seeing this person as blind and think more as a person that likes this or that, then you'll have your answer.

Music? How about a small stereo or something that is easy to navigate with their fingers (like, the buttons have the symbol indented in the plastic so he/she can "feel" the "play", "skip", "next", "power", etc buttons)? Maybe one with a cassette player so they can listen to "books on tape".

Try Walmart or Kmart or something for a decently priced one. Here is a nice boombox with CD player and cassette player with the symbol impressions on the buttons for $34.88 at Walmart. Maybe you and another person could chip in together.

If you don't have that much money or they already have a stereo, you can give them CDs or cassettes to listen to...

Here is a website I found for all kinds if assistive devices to help them with every day tasks.

    http://www.maxiaids.com/

It has everything from alerts for step hazards, weather alerts, motion sensor alerts, and more. I'm sure they know the layout of their house/apartment pretty well, but I'm sure there's some helpful household devices they would like.

I'm assuming someone will be there when they open their gifts in order to tell them what it is. So I'm sure gift cards would still be appropriate, particularly to restaurants or something. Blind or not, they still have to eat, so they could go out with a friend, a spouse, a family member, etc and have a nice dinner. Someone would just need to be there to tell them where the gift card is for and how much is on it.

Personally, I don't know anyone who is blind, so I'm not sure what kinds of things would be helpful/appropriate. Try asking family members or other close friends what the person would like for their birthday.

    Good luck!

While thinking of the gift, you should not focus on the "blind" issue.. just think of a sweet gift that suits the person's personality, and would mean a lot to him/her as a "human" not as a "blind person".

After-wards.. after you think of the gift, and come up with ideas... check their convenience with this person's conditions (being blind).

BTW, I liked the (music) idea by other Y!A participants.

Flowers, concert tickets, a dinner out to a cool night spot, shopping at the mall for whatever they like.....find out what they like to do and do it with them. Some of our blind patients have specially made games. Have a game and Pizza party! I bet you learn a lot!
