Nationalism, whether it is good or bad ?

There is a saying in the epic Mahabharat, that, if one is to be sacrificed to save a family, it should be done, if a family is to be sacrificed to save a village or society, it should be done, if a village is to be sacrificed to save a Nation, it should be done and ......

perhaps if sacrifice of a Nation is required to save the Whole World, it should be done ....

.......... but the problem here perhaps is who determines where to go ??? Who is good and bad ? Who is there to be sacrificed and whom to be saved ? Who shall determine these ???.....

What are your thoughts on this issue ?

nationalism is good when the west invades your country and uses wmd like napalm or phosphorus, or cowardly bombs your villages from high up in fighter planes. then nationalism to bleed the invader in a war of attrition is quite a good thing, and works wonderfully.

Source(s): when the cowards send in drones, or chemical attacks, or use cluster bombs made to look like a childs toy, nationalism to deafeat this imperialist crusader is a good thing.

Nationalism sucks. People blame all the wars on religion, but German Catholics killed American Catholics during two world wars, Lutherans killed Lutherans, etc. Sounds like nationalim is more to blame. How do we know who's right? I guess it depends on the propaganda we read. Every group thinks they're the one with all the right motives. Sacrificing even a single human for the "good" of many sounds noble, but who chooses the sacrifice? Personally, I don't like it. Did you read "The Lottery" in high school? It's like that. A lady draws the "it" ticket, and her family and neighbors participate in stoning her. Very creepy. Good things about national borders - they help us locate places on maps, and they help with junk mail delivery.

    Nations are artifical bounderies.

With few examples - there are many reasons for a particula arbitary line is drawn on the landscape. Most involve politics rather than some artifical construct as "National Pride".

I see people getting all teary eyed, declairing a willingness to die for a Country that didn't exist before their Grandparens were born.

I am Terran (one who lives on Earth) first. Human second. Australian third.

  • Nationalism is a bad thing. It creates pride and a sense that we are better than other nations. We are all gods children and all equal.

A lot of wars may have been averted if it was not for nationalism hence eliminating the need to sacrifice anyone

In reality niether the Sun sets nor rises, it is always there (Vedantic Theme) but for practical purposes while living on Mother Earth, Mother and Mother Land are always more important than the heavens (Vedic Theme)

    "Janani Janma Bhoomischha Swargaatha Pigareeyasi"

Sathya Sai Thought for the Day,

Your country and your body are not different from each other. Both are composed of the same five elements. They are inseparably interrelated and totally interdependent. They are like mirror images of each other. Try to recognize this truth. The youth of today are the leaders of the future. If the future is to be prosperous, the modern youth should perform their duties with firm faith in God. You are not separate from the country, but a part of it. Have the firm conviction that this country belongs to you. One who does not say with pride, this is my motherland, this is my mother tongue, this is my religion can be compared to a living corpse. Every person, whichever country he may belong to, should have patriotism firmly ingrained in his heart.

Ah! The answer is hidden in secret book called Bible. It tells of living sacrifice to save whole world.

God of Bible say Israel is sacrifice to be saved but first all Christians fly up to clouds. Yes even dead ones.

Secret book can be viewed at bibleresources.bible.com.

Good question for so early in the morning.

My thought is nobody ought to allow himself to be sacrificed to save anyone else unless its his own idea.

"We're going to have to sacrifice x group for the greater good" has too many potentials greater good being skewed.

Depends on your definition of Nationalism.

Having fun parades and fireworks every July 4th to remember the "olden days" and the time the Brittish tried to tax our tea and we banded together to send them packing....

Protecting our borders from a flood of illegal immigrants...

    That's all just dandy.

But, supporting a dictatorial president who lies to us so he can send the military over to depose some penny-ante punk-*** in the middle of a desert, and then try to set up a puppet government so we can hijack their oil which we shouldn't be needing in the first place........

    That sucks!!!

It not good. It's a juvenile concept indulged in by egg heads who have nothing better to worry about. Governments promote it and are laughing all the way to the bank.

I hate Nationalism. Trust me. Read my profile!

Famous Nationalists: Napoleon, Abraham Lincoln, Hitler, Stalin.

My ancestors hated Lincoln and his so-called Republicans. I am rather on my ancestor's side on this one.
