Jeep soft top upkeep?

I have a 1997 Jeep Wrangler Sahara and have heard many ideas on the cleaning and up keep of the soft top. I read one thing and then another article says not to use it. I was wondering what is the best thing to use to clean and preserve the soft top and the windows to get as many years out of it as possible. Any true help from experience would be helpful

Be sure to use the least abrasive cleaner on those windows. For example, I had mud on my windows, and at the gas station, I used a squeegee to clean the windows. The water for the squeegee was murky. As I cleaned the windows, I made some PERMANENT scratches in the windows because I didn't first HOSE DOWN the windows and use clean cloths to clean them. Be very careful with those windows, because they scratch so easily. Also, place a large towel between the windows if you ly them down when not in use. If they scratch together, they will leave marks on each other, and this too will be bothersome.

When zipping or unzipping, make sure the zippers are CLEAN and free of dirt. Those dirt particles will cause the zipper element to foul really easily.

Don't try to get the zippers repaired if you mess up the top. It will be better to just sell the top element on Ebay, and buy a REPLACEMENT TOP instead. You will be saving money in the long run. Trust me, I found out the expensive way... I spent almost $300 repairing a top, and the guy that fixed the top, couldn't get the top to fit the way it was supposed to. After he fixed it a 2nd time, it appeared to have shrunk even more! What a waste of time and money. Either replace the top or suck it up and buy a Hardtop for the winter/spring and a bikini top for the summer. After buying the Hardtop on Ebay, I haven't thought about my zipper-experience since.

Others have mentioned that you can buy the soft top and the support bars for it. What I have not seen anyone mention yet is that you will also have to buy door surrounds too. These are plastic brackets that connect the top of the windshield around the edge of the door down to the frame near the door handle. These are required because they provide a lip for the soft top to hook into (like the metal lip on the frame). The ones that came on my Wrangler are plastic and attach using rubber seals at the two ends and two bolts at the top. I drive a '98 TJ though so I'm not sure how they will hook up on your YJ or if they will even be made the exact same way. Anyways good luck and keep on Jeepin'!

  • A product called 303 works great in cleaning vinyl. It is usually sold at pool and spa supply stores, and is a vinyl cleaner. A hint for you, is if you ever go offroad, or drive daily on dirt roads, take your top off, turn it inside out, spread it out over a soft surface, and pressure wash each zipping window. This cleans the debris from the zippers and will keep them in working order. I wish I knew this little tip before my driver's side upper door window's zipper quit working. Now I have safety pins in it to keep the window up.

I go off road a lot in mine and have had some really deep scratches from tree limbs etc. The best stuff I've found is called Novus, specially designed for that purpose.

For your top I would check with Quadratec (link below), they have an amazing selection of Jeep parts and accessories.

To clean your windows you can use a very clean damp rag. just ring it out and wipe. make sure the rag is clean or the windows can scratch. soap also causes scratching. bestop does make a window cleaner for soft tops and they might make one for the top itself. check out 4wd.com and if anyone has it they will.

Not sure about the top, but the windows they have special cleaners for: Bestop window cleaner. It's like a cream. My top I just lightly clean with my regular car wash, but I'm not sure if that's what you supposed to do. I know bestop has a top cleaner too, but I've never used it.
