I don't know about dreydl..... but as far as the 'traditional' Shalom
Aleichem, that was written by Israel Goldfarb in the twentieth century.

They had a ghostwriter back then by the name of Madonna. They even wrote a song for her, though the "Lady" part was kind of an in-joke. The Spanish band was "Los Lobos", and the lead singer did indeed date somebody by the name of Lorena. The vasectomy didn't take because the cut was a little too high. Left him in stitches, they say.

that was the very first Jewish song I ever learned as a child and still one of my favorites! If you want to hear some incredible NEW Jewish music, look for Stacy Beyer's CD's- she writes and performs comtemporary music.

there are many many melodies to that line, which appears in the friday night service. many of them are very old, including the famous one by israel goldfarb, written at the end of ww1.
a popular more contemporary one was written by shlomo carlebach, who died just a few years ago, and is available here on the itunes store: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/...
it means peace unto you in hebrew. it's very similar (in sound and meaning) to the salaam alekem that muslims say in greeting.
