Cleaning litter box...and mad cat?

Hi. I am just lost right now. I just got a kitten and she uses her litter box very well. today was the first time i cleaned her litter box. while i was cleaning it up she was right next to me playing beside me. after i was done i noticed that she was out of hand. she was running around everywhere jumping on anything she can seem to go on top of. She just wouldn't calm down. I was thinking she was mad or something. Any suggestions what to do in the future? am I supposed to clean it without her presence? Please help. Thanks so much!

My cat does worse, she actually attacks me, hissing, biting and clawing. I have to close the door to change the box. It was explained to me as going back to feral behaviour in the wild. Cats bury their waste so as to hide it from enemies. So that they cannot tell where they have been. My cat apparantly is more atuned to it's feral nature than most. They are naturally protective of their waste area and don't like people messing with it. Otherwise she is a sweetie, so I just have learned to live with it.

Ya know it just could be a case of coincidence. You were cleaning the litter box and everything was fine. Then out of nowhere the kitten takes off and starts running around like mad at apparently nothing. But kittens will do that lol. Really good chance this had nothing at all to do with anything you did. I bet you see her do it again..I always find it very amusing. But as she gets older she will settle down and you will see less and less of this. Enjoy it while she's a kitten, it all goes so fast :)

I have no idea how you cleaned it, what exactly you did, or even what type of litter you are using, so I can't really advise you as to if you did something she didn't like.

Since you've never cleaned a litter box before, then you might be doing something wrong and making it unusable in her eyes.

And that person below me should not be putting the cat's food and water by the litter box. She's slowly poisoning her cat by doing so. How would she like it if the dining room table was next to the toilet?

You answered your own questions withour realizing it. You said "kitten". Well that's what kittens do. They are active, they are playful and they run around, they climb things, they run in and out. It has nothing to do with the litter box. She is just a kitten acting like a kitten. If she stops then you have something to worry about. In the meantime since you seem to be a new kitty owner, make sure you play with her and have enough toys for her to keep occupied. They don't have to be store bought toys. You can roll up a ball of aluminum foil for her to chase (about the size of a golf ball so she doesn't injest it) Above all, make sure you start her off with some kind of scratching post so she gets used to sharpening her nails in the proper place. Good luck. You are in for a lot of fun.

*P.S. my own personal opinion about a kitten is they are much better off, less destructive and happier if there is another kitten to play with.

I have two cats that are 2 years and 1 year old. They both come around when I clean the litter box and watch. But they both seem content about it and are ready to dirty it back up as soon as I get done. They have never gone crazy about it. Just clean it with out her around you and see what happens. She might just not like your messing with her "territory".

I don't think one thing has anything to do with the other. sometimes kittens will freak out and start running around crazy like for no reason we can see, that is just part of being a kitten. if it happens again, try putting your kitten in a different room while cleaning.

My guess is one of two things.. either she is jealous of the new ferrets, as any cat generally is when a new animal is brought into the house... Or she has an illness of some sort and crapping in the room you happen to be in is her way of telling you that she has a problem. Take her to the vet and rule out and physical problems then if she still does it, you may have to think up something else.

Your kitten wasn't 'mad' she was 'celebrating' because you cleaned her litter box so well. You should 'scoop' it at least twice a day, and 'change the sand' once a week ... if you haven't been doing that, if I was your kitten I'd be celebrating, too!

I would either have a 2nd litter box that can be quickly swapped (same colour, size and shape) for the one you're cleaning or lock her in the room for a few minutes so she can't see what you're doing.

She's a Kitten, and they are quite active. I'd like to think of it as she was very excited and overjoyed that her nice owner is keeping her litter box nice and tidy!!! Any feline friend would be overjoyed. Best wishes...
