Hydrogen, methane, propane, wood, coal and compressed air.

I have heard of automobiles that run on all of these.

well, there are alto of technologies capable of answering that question.......petrol burns at high temperatures and leaves behind co2 and water, co2 is very bad for our climate and it caused global warming; when people started to realize that petrol was the cause of global warming they first started to stop petrol powered cars, but the Detroit officials, ford, gm and lots of others cars manufacturers said they have made a study and global warming is a hoax. When they saw they can't stop petrol-powered cars they started producing alot more diesel cars; diesel burns at temperatures lower than petrol and it gives lower power but the co2 production is surprisingly lower than petrol. Petrol powered cars are still in production, diesel are more and more popular, electricity is not an option because of its low autonomy..

Hydrogen cars could be a good solution; hydrogen has the same autonomy as petrol and diesel and it gives away harmless gases from combustion. We can even use water for driving our cars the water is made from hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis we can separate hydrogen from oxygen, disperse the oxygen and what remains from hydrogen combustion.

    ok, how now imagine this...

A device made out of a metal trash can, a metal drum, and a few off-the-shelf parts that consumes anything you pour into it and turns it into gas to power your car.

We have the technology. Wood gas. Here are instructions on how to make a wood gas generator for your car with a few off the shelf components. The conversion should cost less than $100.

    http://www.gengas.nu/byggbes/index.shtml

Basically, you can power your car on anything that will burn. This is not a difficult technology to produce at home. Millions of conversions were done during WWII when Europe had no access to oil.

This is actually America's plan in case we run out of oil. We are not likely to run out of oil any time soon, but the technology exists to make a rapid transition. This book was written by the department of energy.

Most of the technologies that you will find people suggest are not practical - some examples:

Hydrogen - Hydrogen is not readily available except by partial combustion of methane which uses up over half of the usefulness of methane as a fuel. Hydrogen is dense in energy by weight, but it takes up enormous volume. Metal hydride storage tanks are expensive and compresed hydrogen is not only expensive but also explosive. Bad option. Not economically viable.

Methane - Same deal, lighter than air, not easily stored

Solar - Solar cars are basically recumbent bicycles with a carbon fiber frame and a tiny eletric motor. These things barely have enough room for one person. Lying down.

Electric - Expensive. Heavy. Low milage - about 60 miles to the charge based on my research. I looked into doing a conversion but the time and expense involved turned me off to the idea.

As for the naysayers who claim that carbon dioxide will ruin the environment - wake up. If you burn things that grow, that is a carbon-neutral emission. If you burn a tree for example, and plant a tree in its place, you make zero impact on carbon emissions worldwide.

The other sources are Hydrogen Fuel cells,Solar cells,Bio-Diesel, and nowadays some people are working on make the vehicle run on the water.

All of the above are rediculous. The hampster-wheel is the only way to go.

Not under a capitalist economic system. Dick and his Halliburton buddies have too much money to lose if we came up with something else.
