How do I get video from my camcorder in digital format to put on video sites?

I have a camcorder that has a small tape in it. I want to be able to get the video in digital format.

If it is a MINI DV camcorder, most likely it has a FIREWIRE port on the camcorder. So you would need a a proper firewire cable.

Most higher end laptops have this small firewire connector, all you need is software to get the video off the camcorder. You can also buy an add on card for desktops (but it is a large connector so buy the proper small to large firewire cable).

If you do not have any video editing software that "talks to firewire ports" you can use this free software http://www.avid.com/products/freedv/index.asp

Your computer needs a firewire card and then you also need a firewire cord to connect the camera to the computer.
