What kind of clothes/stuff do teenagers wear? My friend says I look an old lady, im just 20! SAVE!!!?

I need to find fashion blogs or some ideas which give me idea of what to wear, jeans, tops, shoes, and some accessories that young girls wear. What is fashionable. My best friend at NY college says I look like an old lady, the compliment obviously hurted me. But I am not used to makeup or trendy clothes, all I have is nice fit jeans and some weird tops - some trendy, some apparently like an old lady..

Images will be helpful. I am 20, 5.2".. My hair is shoulder length, with a lil bangs (which I got done coz I dont wanna look plain jane/matured lady)

    Problem:

-Accessories to go with the outfit

Alright, well for accessories I'd go for the basics like silver, or even gold... and maybe some black/white chunky necklaces and bracelets, which seem to be very fashionable nowadays.... Here are some types of styles to chose from that I found that I think can go with any outfit:

*when looking for jewelry to use all day (school) try to get some that aren't too delicate or else you might have more trouble later on maintaining it. Plus fashionable beads and wooden jewelry look stylish and simple so they accent an outfit. That's probably a reason why they're so popular. I think complicated pieces make style look too forced anyways. Especially if ur wearing a lot of patterns on your clothes to begin with. But, If ur wearing solid colors for the most part, then elaborate earrings/necklaces/bracelets add a positive accent, but if you wear a lot of detailed things all at once, you may feel a bit weighed down. And you'll probably look that way too. But again, this opinion is just in general. You may find that this rule doesn't always apply, but I think its a good basis to go by.

-Trying to make my outfit really fashionable

What you need to do is take a good look at your closet. The things I always make sure I have in mine are good basics. That's plain tank tops, any henley sweater tops, (If you don't know what these are, google it), and comfortable capris (as many materials/colors as possible). This is the base of a nice fall outfit. Now, I don't know how cool it gets in fall, but layers are practical and stylish if you can see them. Don't just grab any fall sweater to pull over a tee, go to the mall and find some sweaters that

-has buttons down the front (so you can unbutton to show ur layers underneath

    -has pockets (optional)

    -thin hoods on them (fashionable*)

    -made of comfortable material

or even thin- multipatterned jackets that zip up work fine

Now layers aren't what your mom says they are. They're not neccessarily to keep you warm in this situation, although it is warm to some extent. well make sure that your layers can be shown a bit underneath eachother. Layers are even fashionable in hot weather. Just make sure that you like and are comfortable with all the peices you put on top of one another.

-What to wear, What not to wear

I personally like to mix and match, and it really depends on what you have...but if you have a lot of basic comfortable things that can layer, ur good to go! Just make sure that jeans and long pants cover the tops of ur shoes, ur shirts don't rise up when u raise ur hand, and nothing is too tight or too baggy. Now one thing I think is cute and girly that some ppl don't like are the jumper tops:

    http://z.about.com/d/teenfashion/1/8/D/4/-/-/jumpe...

I think they're soooooo cute! I'm wearing one now, actually, but mine has a plaid pattern. U wear a small plain t-shirt underneath, and they look so simple to wear with jeans or leggings

    -Where to shop

hmmm....20....well I personally shop at wet seal a lottt. I like that place and pac sun, so anything from those stores are great I think.

    -Shoes to go with it

I like ballet flats, brown/black flipflops (i don't think u can wear those to school tho), and white running shoes.

    -Anything else to know

Take good care of your clothes!!! Clothes are not cheap, and remember that anything that's 100% cotton will shrink if you put it in the dryer. Pay close attention to what the directions say. I always wash mine in cold water, so if ur mom does ur laundry make sure u tell her to be careful of the directions.

It would be really nice to put an outfit together for me. Im not that picky, so feel free to pick out whatever.

alright, well one outfit I think is nice for school is this:

    http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://mydr...

    http://www.theeuroboutique.com/images/products/no-...

If you can't find this exact outfit, something similar is just as nice. (or jeans enstaid of the jean skirt**)

    hope this helped!

It sounds to me like you're wearing what teenagers wear! I wear the same things and I don't think I look old. The nice fit jeans are good; most people are wearing flare leg (which I hate), skinny leg (ugh!), or trouser/wide legs (thumbs up!). As for the tops, go with what makes YOU happy. I do think that clothes should complement your body, so maybe you should take a moment and check out the fit of your clothes: too baggy? Too big? I used to wear a lot of clothes that were too tight/loose/clashed with my skin tone/loud and I found that they can age you. You know how you'll see the lady in her forties wearing muumuus like she's 70?

I'm not fashionable at all; I like comfort and classic pieces that I won't have to give up as trends pass. Sounds like you're the same but with a bit more flair. Wear what you like and what looks good on you, but don't be afraid to try something new! I like to pile on bracelets sometimes because they look funky and highlight my shirt, or I'll use a scarf as a belt just for a bit of color. Whatever you do, do it up and do it proudly!

Can you provide us with an example of something "old ladyish" you wear?

I think that if you have a style all your own you should keep it! If you're insecure about it now thanks to this "friend" you can

add TO the style, not change it.

Pair one of your old lady tops with a fitted jacket, skinny jeans and killer heels. And don't say old lady like anymore call it VINTAGE. Thats very in. I shop at Steve and Barry's for basics. And I make sure all my shirts are long enough (I'm not trying to look skanky of TOO young) and FITTED-- you don't want to look sloppy. Buy tees and tanks in a variety of colors, and various neck lines, and buy them in varying thicknesses so that you can layer if you want to. Add these tees to NICE fitting (no muffin top please) jeans and pretty heels with a few accessories-- cute earrings, layered necklaces, cocktail ring OR hat (PICK ONE NOT ALL!) and you'll be set.

Keep make up neutral for day, a dab of tinted gloss, swipe of mascara, swish of eyeliner, and don't forget a moisterizer wiht an SPF! Add pizazz to evening make up with shimmery smoky eyes or vamped up lips. Let your hair be tousled and natural during the day and at night you can pin it up, or curl it.

What exactly do you do? You should have work clothes, play clothes (going out somewhere nice? or to a club? ) you need different outfits for all of these!

Shoes to me are about comfort. They can be the cutest thing in the world but if they hurt...nope can't do it. There ARE comfy heels out there! Don't just stick with flats because you're scared!

And NOT everyone looks good in skinny jeans... I know I SURE DON'T! I'm a pear shape and they just hit my hips in all the wrong places. Don't get something just because its trendy or it looks good on the girl in the magazine. TRY IT ON! Stacy and CLinton are always telling people you MUST try it on! And buy things that can easily mix and match, and be taken from day to night, office to a night on the town by switching a few accessories.

Here are some looks I love!

Shop at places like A'gaci, Forever 21, Charlotte Russe, and Wet Seal for tops and for jeans go to American Eagle or Ross they have a great selection there and they sell their stuff for less than half off! Also for accessories you can go to Forever 21, Target, and Wet Seal! Hope I helped! = )

I agree that you should wear what you want.. but if you want to fit in more... go into any grocery store or pharmacy and buy some typical teen/ young adult magazines such as 17, Ellegirl or Elle, vogue... or look in a people magazine- you will get lots of ideas

  • 1 decade ago

Look in some magazines... People, US Weekly, CosmoGirl, Cosmopolitan, Ok!, etc. You can study what the celebs wear because they wear the latest fashions but also they have lots of clothes references and things like that.

pick up some magazines like vogue or elle or something like that.

stick to your style, but try to make it less "sophisticated" and more modern and age appropriate.

    as for websites:

    seventeen.com,

    www.internetrends.com,

    http://www.glamour.com,/

    http://blogs.nypost.com/fashion, http://iamfashion.blogspot.com/

stores i suggest are bebe, the limited, bloomingdales, etc.

take risks on whatever you pick out.

shoes: its all about the heels. toe pumps are great.

makeup: foundation, bronzer, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, lip gloss. and for tips: read magazines!

accessories can be anything fun and colorful/playful

maybe some big bright yellow or red beads.
