Time to get the thinking caps out. How do you feel about this Harris poll.?

http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/breakingnews/world/vi...

1 in 3 adults in the US admit to being well versed in US politics. As repercussions go, what does that say about our electoral process in general?

Does this mean the current front runners are there because they are inspiring candidates or are they there because we as a people recognize the names?

Do you feel we as a society bone up on the issues as we get closer to election or is 1 in 3 in the know the best we can achieve?

I'm actually amazed that it's not lower than that. I would have placed it at more of a 4 or 5 to 1 ratio. It's scary to realize that so many of these uninformed voters, head for the polls. I would imagine that many are one issue voters and could care less about anything else.

That leaves two-thirds who are not well-versed, vote only with their emotions and base their voting on the half truths that fuel those emotions.

Given the emotionally-induced hateful answers that will more than likely follow this one, my point should be well proven and should give you an idea how the voting may go as we get closer to the elections, as the candidates flame the emotional aspect of the debate, cut out even further the factual part of the debate, and then because of all the hype, will be able to "logically" blame global warming and Haliburton for all life's problems upon their defeat

i think our failure to know our history and the failure of most citizens to think independently is a contributing source of our political divided.

Most ppl vote by name recognition only so this generally means the one with the most money an wins the vote of the candidate that their party supports.

if is almost impossible to get and honest answer from any politician so their voting record should be considered as to their actual vote on a issue rather than words they spout at a current debate.

more Americans vote for their favorite 'American idol' than vote in the presidential election. perhaps if we were to change our electoral process this might increase those willing to participate.

who can acquire the most campaign funds seems to dictate who will run for office, we lose many who might have good solutions and answers to our issues but since we use this method to elect leaders we will never know this for a fact.

I would be shocked if it is even 1 in 3. So many people read or listen to headlines. I have been amazed at the number of times people have spouted a email as fact, it even happens here.

Do I think we can do better? I hope we can, but I think to many people think it is unimportant to become informed, 'after all, that is why we elect these guys, right? To take care of all that."

I think the front runners are because of a combination of name recognition and the opportunity to be the "firsts"... first woman pres, first black pres... as well as media hype in general.

Though that wouldn't really explain McCain's placement. I think he's run so many campaigns that some of the American public may be saying, "Oh god, not him again" by this point... hence his poor fundraising.

I don't think any election is fair until the electoral college is gone. At least my vote counts in local elections, if not the national ones.

It is largely because they see them on television, either in attack ads or in debates. The vast majority of Americans do not take the time or trouble to really scrutinize a candidate. Many of them go by what they hear in the media, and it is the media that can elect a candidate.

Polls are fiction so I don't waste time 'thinking' about them.
