Is it legal when you shop at Walmarts the person on way out of the store stop you to see what you bought?

I am in Canada and I think that constututes an illegal search and seizure and they are acting in ways only a police officer can.Surely they have adequate security and theft prevention measures in place to deter crime without asking people on way out of store to show their sales slip and prrof of purchases

NOTE: "It's legal, as long as the procedure is voluntary."

That is - if you don't want them to do it, just walk on by. If they detain you in any way, then it's "false imprisonment" and you become the owner of the fine establishment....

Im sure its legal or they wouldnt do it.By the way security guards have no arrest powers they can only try to detain you untill the police arrive.Im seeing a lot of.But I think what you are asking is all about the WalMart employee that stands at the door.I believe that is a load of crap being stopped and asked to look at you purchases I dont care about them being a private company and being on private property. You go in cause they advertise to get your bussiness then you wait in line sometimes far far too long then when you leave they want to hold you up again.Perhaps they need to hire someone to stand at the end of each check out to watch the transaction at that point to make sure the cashier does everything properly.

Illegal search and seizure would actually only apply if it was a police officer or other government actor doing it. Since Wal-Mart is a private company, they are entitled to take these measures on their property. That doesn't mean they can pat you down or strip-search you, but they can take reasonable steps.

When I leave BJ's, they don't let me out unless they've compared my receipt with what's in my cart, then punch a hole through the receipt. It is a reasonable means to curtail theft.

This loss prevention tactic is usually used in high-ticket specialty stores who have experienced large inventory losses.

A merchant is free to put procedures in place to help curb their losses due to theft. And it's legal, as long as the procedure is voluntary. (They can just say that they're making sure the cashier made the transaction correctly.)

A customer can refuse to have their bag checked and simply walk out the door past the bag checker. Hopefully the bag checker has been trained to know that they cannot force anyone to submit to a bag search without cause.

If you think it constitutes an illegal search and seizure, the next time you go to Walmart and they try to stop you and look into your bag just take off running and tell them to they will never look in your bag and will be a cold day in hell before they do......see what happens and let me know how that worked out for you

Perfectly legal seeing you consented to the search when you entered the establishment. It is a private business where you entered at your own free will knowing this was a possibility.

Heym come on. Its just to give some person with little skills something to do. Give them a break. Next time, purchase a whole bag of condoms and watch their eyes pop out of their head.

this irritates me too. Usually it's because the cashier doesn't do his/her job and run things over the demagnetizer. Then when you walk out the door it trips the alarm. It makes you feel like a common theif. I hate it. I wish there was something you could do about it.

And what do you think the "checker at the door" is for????
