Any homemade playdough ideas?

Rubbery Playdough

2 cups baking soda

1 1/2 cups water

1 cup cornstarch

Mix with a fork until smooth. Boil over medium heat until thick. Spoon onto plate or wax paper.

Nature's Playdough

1 cup flour

1/2 cup salt

1 cup water

2 T oil

2 T cream of tartar

beet, spinach, and carrot juice

Mix flour, salt and oil, and slowly add the water. Cook over medium heat, stirring until dough becomes stiff. Turn out onto wax paper and let cool. Knead the dough with your hands until of proper consistency. Use as is, or divide into balls and add a few drops of the vegetable juices to make green, pink, and orange.

Play dough

4 cups flour

1/4 cup powdered tempera

1/4 cup salt

1 1/2 cups water

1 T oil

Mix together flour, powdered paint and salt.

Mix water and oil, and food coloring if desired. Gradually stir the water and oil mix into the flour mix. Knead the mix as you add the liquid. Add more water if too stiff, more flour if sticky.

Alum Play Dough

2 cups flour

1 cup salt

2 T alum

1 cup water

2 T oil

liquid food coloring

Pour dry ingredients into large pan. Stir together to mix. Stir oil and food coloring into the water. Pour liquid into the dry ingredients while mixing, squeezing and kneading the dough. If too sticky, add more flour. Keeps best in the fridge.

Just like the REAL Playdough (so they say)

1 cup flour

1 cup water

1 T oil

1 T powdered alum

1/2 cup salt

2 T vanilla

food coloring

Mix all dry ingredients. Add oil and water. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until reaching the consistency of mashed potatoes. Remove from heat and add vanilla and food coloring. Divide into balls and work in color by kneading.

Oatmeal Dough

1 C. Flour

2. C. Oatmeal

1 C. Water

Gradually add water to flour and oatmeal in bowl. Kneed until mixed (this dough is sticky, but unique in texture.) Model as with clay.

VARIATIONS: Add cornmeal or coffee grounds in small quantity for texture.

Nutty Butter Playdough

1 C. Peanut butter

1 C. Powdered Milk

1 C. Honey

1 C. Oatmeal

Mix together and play and/or eat.

Kool-Aid Play Dough

2 1/2 to 3 cups flour

2 cups boiling water with 1 pkg. Kool-aid (any flavor)

3 T corn oil

1/2 cup salt

1 T alum

Peanut butter playdough, Kool Aid playdough and snow playdough

Use a packet of unsweetened drink mix like Kool Aid. It'll give your dough color and fun smell. Buy several packets and let the kids choose which color they want! I made this recipe for my class recently, and they loved it! I didn't have any cream of tartar, so I left it out. Seemed to do just fine without it. This is a non-edible play dough:

Chocolate Play Dough

2 cups water

1/2 cup salt

2 Tablespoons cream of tartar

2 Tablespoons vegetable oil

1/3 cup cocoa

2 cups Flour

In a medium-sized pot, bring the water and salt to a boil. Stir in the remaining ingredients; then

allow the mixture to cool slightly. Knead the dough until it reaches a smooth doughy consistency.

Then store the dough in a resealable plastic bag.

Gingerbread Playdough

1 cup flour

1/2 cup salt

2 tsp. cream of tartar

Spices: allspice, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg

1 cup water

1 tsp. vegetable oil

Mix dry ingredients with spices to get color you like (smells good too) Mix water and vegetable oil

together, add to dry ingredients, stir. Cook the mixture for 2-3 minutes in a pot, stirring frequently.

The dough will pull away from sides of pan and clump together. Knead the dough until soft, smooth,

and pliable. Cool. Store in air tight container such as plastic baggie.

Snow Dough

1 c. flour

1/2 c. salt

1 Tbsp. oil

1 c. water

2 tsp. cream of tartar

2 - 3 tsp. dry white tempera paint (optional)

Mix everything except glitter in a pan, heat over low heat, stir constantly until dough thickens and

pulls away from pan. Remove from pan. Knead until smooth, add glitter, till dough sparkles like

snow. Store in plastic baggie.

when i made play dough for a group of kids a babysat they came up with the idea to mix different colors put a couple of drops of different color food coloring in at and mix it that way it makes some interesting swirls

I have added Kool aid to my playdough but you have to be careful the kids don't eat it.

You can also add glitter to make it really sparkle.

Add a little peppermint flavoring to the recipe and the play dough will make the whole room smell fresh every time the kids use it.

Any type of baking flavors work. Like the extracts, lemon, orange, vanilla. Ground cinnamon is nice too. Adding textures like sand or coffee grounds gives it a new feel.
