Looking for books for preschool-age children that represent princesses as strong, independent, and capable, and princes as good, helpful, and wise friends. I want to lead the children away from the traditional view of the princess who is weak and wilting and awaiting rescue.

I don't want to focus specifically on "Christmas", but that is the children's interest right now. Would love to hear some suggestions for small-group activities. (Fishy, hoping to hear from you!)

I have noticed some tiny (about 1/4 inch long) insects flying around in northwestern PA that are beautiful. They look like fluffy white feather with delicate black wings. They almost seem to just float around on the breeze, but when I catch one and really look at it, I can see it's definitely an insect of some kind.

I heard that it is no longer legal for children to call their parents "mom" and "dad" in California. This sounds so absurd that I'm thinking I must have been misinformed. Can anyone tell me where such an idea might have come from?

It starts out "open and shut, open and shut, this is the way we cut, cut, cut." It also has a line about "Fingers on the bottom and thumb on the top" and I can't remember the rest of it! If you know the words, I would love to use it for a lesson on using scissors! I already tried googling with no luck.

My granddaughter is not feeling well. She is 12 and just says she doesn't feel good. She is having vague aches and pains, headaches, extreme fatigue, and often just seems "out of it." I remember reading recently about something like that going around in kids, but I can't remember the details or where I read it. Anyone know anything about this?

I think future students need to realize the value of this question, because a good teacher NEVER stops learning. They are taught by other teachers, their environment, books, the media, and most of all by their students. It is so very important that teachers learn all they can about their students, in order to be able to teach them!

Anybody care to comment on this?
