Frosting a layer cake?
Every time I try to frost my cakes, the frosting sticks to the cake, peeling it off every time I lift the spatula. What am I doing wrong?

Freeze the layers first, then put a huge blob of room temperature frosting (twice as much as you need) in the center of one of the layers. Spread from the middle outwards using as few strokes as possible. Use a spatula knife, which is just for frosting cakes. It takes some practice, but you can do it!!

You need to make sure your cake is completely cool .. I wrap my cakes in plastic wrap sprayed with non stick spary and put in the freezer for a couple of hours. Its okay if it freezes then take out and use butter spread to cover the cake. Use it like frosting only use very little so that it covers the cake enough for the crumbs to stick to the cake. DO NOT USE TO MUCH this only to prevent it from falling apart. Then let it sit for a couple of mins then frost as normal. Imake and decorate cakes and this always works for us....good luck

My mother would always put the cake in the fridge for about two hours before applying frosting. Hers always came out very nice. For added pretty, use a fork to add extra effects, if you want to cover up any clumping, running it over the sides.

not a thing frosting a whole 2 layer cake is a pain in the butt. the only thing to do is to keep putting more frosting on and keep the knife or what ever you use clean.

make sure you let your cakes cool thoroughly before frosting them - working with a cool cake is crucial. the icing should be at room temperature. try putting on a crumb layer first - that's a layer to ::glue:: the crumbs together so you don't have speckled icing on the top layer. the crumb layer should sit for about a half hour so the icing is hard-ish. (won't affect taste/texture of the cake.)

Make sure your cake is really cool. When layering slice the top of your bottom layer so it is good and flat, and you may try to thin the layer of frosting that you are going to use in the center of the layers. Good Luck!

That happens to me too. Forget the frosting, forget the cake. Eat the frosting (I hope chocolate) out it's container!

Add a bit of milk to the frosting so it is not as thick. And be sure your cake is completelty cooled before frosting.

It's supposed to stick to it, but not until you're done. Maybe your cake layers aren't getting done enough. Try baking them for the maximum time and letting them cool, completely.
Then spread the icing all over, as if you were painting.
