I'm an American living in Switzerland for 17 years, which is exactly how long I've been married. We have two awesome bilingual kids with whom I stay home, having left an extremely stressful job in the commodities trading industry. I dabble in commercial and freelance writing. Though I'm closer to 40 than I'd like to be, I'm aging gracefully and healthily, which is really all that matters. Likes: music, travel, books, writing, cooking, research, exercise (it's true) The Flylady, and fashion. Dislikes: multitasking, scuba diving, emptying the dishwasher, aloofness (is that a word?), misinformation and capri pants. 'Life is a series of short stories pretending to be a novel' -Anonymous

  • What is a charter school?

I don't live in the U.S. anymore and have heard the term "charter school" but don't know what it is. Would someone let me know the basics and how they compare to a conventional school?

  • What is this band from the 90s?

The video is so clear in my head but I can't remember their name ARGH!

Lead singer is tall, blonde and wearing a jeans top and bottom. He has 2 backup girls and a boom box. Definitely Britpop, perhaps Electronica or disco. Not Stereophonics but similar in name....

Does anyone have any clues as to which song I'm trying desperately to remember? Thanks.

  • "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn"?

In this book, Francie Nolan takes a job as a news reader/clipper, sorting newspaper stories, clipping them out and filing them away to be sent to "customers".

Have you ever heard of such a job? And what purpose did it serve during the early 1900's?

    P.S. This isn't a homework question ;-) Thanks.

  • Moms do you have a tip jar?

From time to time as I do my chores I find small change (and occasionally big change) in my family's clothes pockets, between sofa cushions or sometimes even on the floor and I add it to what I call my tip jar. Do you do this too?

  • Does your family celebrate Advent?

Growing up in the US, my family celebrated Advent with wreathes, calendars, cookie baking and decorating. But by the time I was a young adult the tradition seemed to have fallen out of favor. After moving to Europe and starting a family of my own, I've discovered that here the month before Christmas is filled with wonderful family feasts, events and traditions.

Does your family celebrate this special time? And if so, how?

  • Wine & cheese?

I'm putting together a small wine & cheese buffet (about 10 people). My crowd prefers red to white wine, so I'm serving both. What are some guidelines to keep in mind?

What's the difference between the three? Is meat glace just concentrated stock used specifically for sauces?

  • A question for dads?

I recently mentioned to my husband that soon he will have to start teaching our little boy the art of being a gentleman. He seemed genuinely shocked and had to admit the thought had not even occurred to him.

What about you Y!A dads? Are you teaching your boys to be chivalrous? If so, how?

  • Cooking shortcuts?

I love to cook and make nearly every meal from fresh ingredients. But during the week, I'm rather pressed for time (especially during lunch).

  • What to do about fighting?

My children (boy and girl) do not have much in common so they don't play together very often. But lately they have been fighting like crazy! They play, they fight and I have to break it up. This goes on until I lose my temper and seperate them but they still seem to gravitate to one another and the whole bull starts again.

They seem to really want to play together but they just can't resolve it when things go sour.

What do I do? Do I teach them how to play together or do I keep seperating them?
