"A Tree Grows in Brooklyn"?

In this book, Francie Nolan takes a job as a news reader/clipper, sorting newspaper stories, clipping them out and filing them away to be sent to "customers".

Have you ever heard of such a job? And what purpose did it serve during the early 1900's?

P.S. This isn't a homework question ;-) Thanks.

Actually, I know lots of institutions still do this.

Universities have clippers who will find anything in the media that is about anyone who is in any way related to the university.

They then send the info to the person in question. They also keep a file (these days, usually a computerized file) of all the related articles.
