Washing fine china?

Would it be OK to put my fine china in the dishwasher on the setting for glassware?

    China Care and Cleaning

Cleaning the good china can turn washing the dishes from a routine kitchen cleaning chore, to one that's more time consuming as we gingerly handle plates and teacups for fear of breakage. There's good news though. Most modern china can be washed in the dishwasher using a mild detergent that does not contain lemon or bleach. To prevent breakage, place pieces so that they do not touch each other. Turn your dishwasher on to the "china" or "gentle" setting. Once it's clean and dry, allow the china to cool completely before removing from the dishwasher. Certain types of china can become even more fragile when heated, so it's imperative the china cools before storing. For this reason, only warm soapy water should be used when handy washing fine china.Use a mild dishwashing liquid. Hand painted, metal trimmed, or antique china should always be hand washed. To protect china when washing the dishes, place a dishtowel or protective mat on the bottom of the sink before beginning to clean. If cups have stubborn coffee or tea stains, dip your sponge in some baking soda and rub gently to remove the stain. To protect china during storage, place a coffee filter or paper plate between each bowl or dish before stacking. China should be stored in temperature and humidity controlled areas to protect the glaze. Take your china out of storage at least once a year and wash the pieces to keep impurities from impregnating the glaze and keep the glaze strong.

If unsure I would hand wash it as almost all detergents contain bleach and or Lemon...=)

DON'T put it in a washing machine!!! It was probably made before washing machines were commonly used or before they were even invented. Washing machines and washing powder were not invented to clean fine china and even the gentlest wash and washing powder/conditioner will be too rough and abrasive for it. Clothes don't smash so they can be rolled and spinned around in a washing machine. Putting any sort of china or pot in a washing machine will do damage to the washing machine and will smash the china. The best thing to do is to hand wash it. Just rinse it and rub it with a cloth. If it doesn't come up sparkling white it won't matter - it will give it more age and look more valuable. DON'T put it in a dishwasher either. The paint will come off.

I would definately recommend not putting your fine china in the dishwasher! Even if the china itself is 'dishwasher safe' the problem comes in when dishes clang against each other or the dividers in the washing machine they can easily chip. The best way to wash fine china is in warm water (not super hot!) with a gentle dishsoap. Don't forget to pad the sink! If you drop a dish it can chip, or if they hit one another 2 may be chipped.

    Um, no.

And don't let china soak in the dishwater, either...it can weaken it and cause "water stains."

Just put on some good music and ENJOY the experience of washing your lovely china.

It will be a pleasure to REALLY look at and handle it, which you probably don't get to do very often.

I would NEVER put fine china in a dishwasher. It's not worth the risk.

We have a set by Norotaki, or something like that, and my Mother in Law who know EVERYTHING insist that it be done by hand. I mean if you think about it, its not that often, and not that much, just in case.
