What is a charter school?

I don't live in the U.S. anymore and have heard the term "charter school" but don't know what it is. Would someone let me know the basics and how they compare to a conventional school?

They're a great invention really. Like a private school but it's actually a federally funded public school. They have a higher teacher to student ration and generally smaller than huge public schools. They sometimes have all that a public school has to offer and more. There are also options for a speedier graduation and college prep. Some wear uniforms and some don't. Some are gated and some aren't. I had planned to take custody of my younger sister and take her to one of these... never happened but just letting you know I did a lot of research on these. I think that the children really benefit from these and plan to put my child in one if I can't afford a private school. This also helps if you don't want your child to go to the school that he/she is supposed to be in based on the area. There are even some charter schools that have flexible or night schedules for working teens and some have day care centers for teens who have had early pregnancies. There are even charter schools that do computer based learning so they do their school work on computers. There are many options out there, just depends on what you want, the environment you want, the options you want, etc etc

A charter school is a gov't funded school that works around peoples schedules. It usually has smaller classroom sizes so the students get more one on one help. But also for teens who have bad situations (single parent, on there own to escape an abusive home etc) it lets him work and go to school so they can still graduate. However, I heard (this is not fact) that colleges do not look as well on a Diploma from a charter school as they would a normal high school. But I think they are great because too many people would end up just dropping out if it wasn’t for them.

Oooh! I go to one! It is, like others say, a publicly funded school, but they hold the right to choose what they spend their funds on. Not the school district. I go to a Performing and Fine Arts Academy Charter and I have to say that it is a good choice. My school is 6-12 grade and it only has 500 students. I am friends with most my teachers and really look up to them. Very cool. My school doesn't have P.E., instead we take ballet or other forms of dance. We don't have lockers, instead we have a home set and a school set for our books. Cool stuff like that happens at Charter schools... AND THEY ARE FREEEE!!!! Woot.
