We have a female puggle, 1 year old. Looking to get a basset hound companion for her. Male or Female?

Hi, we have a female puggle who will be a year old soon. She is doing great, but we are looking to get her some companionship. Specifically a basset hound. Would it be better for us to get a male puppy or female puppy? Our puggle is fixed, but we would still worry about any funny business. But I've also heard that sometimes two females don't get along as well. Which is the best bet?

And please, I don't need to hear it from the puggle haters.

Update:

Thanks for all the great answers so far, and we have a reputable basset breeder picked out.

It is best to get the opposite sex. The females can over time begin dominance struggles for who is the alpha female. It is best to get a male so that if the female is naturally the dominate one the male will not challenge her for position and vise versa. Make sure the male is neutered.

Either... it is true that sometimes dogs of the same sex have territory problems. But I have 2 females and one male (basset hounds) and they all get along fine. The females are some what territorial over food sometimes but no major problems. Either will be fine... Bassets are so laid back! Make sure you get it fixed! And also look for a good breeder...

Bassets are wonderful, friendly dogs that get along well with most other animals, especially if raised with that other dog as a puppy. I breed bassets and I can tell you that all my dogs get along beautifully, even the unaltered males and females.

I would get a male. Females can be aggressive around other females. Chances are yours would probably be fine because she is spayed though. Best thing would be to find a prospective pup and let the two interact in a small area.

Puggles are very cute! We have an eleven year old female pug. I think a female would be good. If your puppy is only one, that is not very old for her to get used to another dog. I think they would learn to live together fine. It is nice that you are getting a companion for your dog. I wish I would have got one for my puggie girl. Best Wishes with your doggies!!!!!

I would suggest getting a male. Our males and females get along together, our males get along together but the females get into a spat occasionally. They are more apt to fight.

Male...if you have female vs female agggression you have a very big problem on your hands. Male and female combination is less likely to have aggression issues.

Either or. I had a male and my mom got a female...they adore each other! Our other two dogs are both males and they are best friends!

I say a male would be better because they would get along easily but a girl would work also.

    hope this helps u ;-)
