What is the maximum allowance for child support in NJ?
My income has drastically changed. I have to cut back on my already-short work hours b/c I'm going back to school full-time. I have car insurance to pay for every month, rent, electric.. well, you name it I've got to pay for it... that's not including, of course, all the expenses of taking care of an adorable 2 year old. No one in my city seems to have any knowledge of child support laws (mind you, I'm referring to the employees who should know this stuff). I don't get much child support (just enough for say, milk). I need to know what the guidelines are as the NJ child support website is VERY vague.
How much can I get for one child when I know for a fact this "man" makes much more than I do.
Also: The office who filed my case made many errors. My son's father did not have to pay from the time my son was born but a year later & I was told I could not get any of that money. Don't know who to speak to or where to get assistance.

The amount for child support is determined by the income of the father and the mother. It is also determined by who the custodial parent is (sounds like you) and whether the father shares custody or if he just has visitation.
You need to go to the COUNTY (not the city) to get help with child support. Many counties have "Department of Child Support Services" or some similar sounding name. They are staffed by attorneys who can assist you.
But, of course, you need to have an acknowledgment of paternity by the father. Otherwise, the process is slow if the father refuses to acknowledge paternity.

I am not in NJ but I wanted to tell you about GA laws to give you an idea. Here the case is reviewed only every 3 years, and then usually one of the parents must request it. And if it took until the child was a year or whatever and NO support case was in effect then you can't get back support, like from the time of birth. Also here the amount determined is based on the amount each parent makes and how many children are involved. I hope this helps a little.

Look up NJ support laws on line or go see an attorney.
And why should your ex have to pay more because YOU want to go back to school and give up working?
Think he could get away with not working or paying support if he decided the same thing?
Why not give custody to your ex while you go back to school? Sounds like that would be better for your son since your income has reduced voluntarily.
Your life choices should be just that...your choices. Support is for your son, not your bills when you cut your income with your choices.
Sounds to me you want your cake and eat it too at the expense of your ex.
