Best laptops I have dealt with are Toshiba by far. They have the least issues and can take a bit of a beating. They may be a little pricier, but in the long run worth the money. I worked desktop support and our company had tons of Toshiba, a few dell, HP, and Sony. I worked on the Toshiba far less than any of them even if they were the most numerous. Even when I did have to work on them the problem was seldom as expensive to fix as the others either.

I have tried a number of different brands of Laptops, but my personal preference are Toshiba Satellite's. They are relatively cheap and do everything I want, even better than my top of the range PC did!
They have a great sound system on them, not tinny like some other brands I have tried. Crystal clear graphics with the High Definition screen (HDTV). High speed video card, enabling me to play the big fast paced games without it crashing.
IMHO they are great value for money and are built to last. I don't know how many times I have dropped my Laptop on the hard floor and it still looks like new :-)

The best type of laptop to get is a Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092. I have one, and I love it. I would highly recommend it, especially for a college student.

The two top selling mainline 15.4 inch models are the Dell Inspiron 1520 and the HP6500t. Two good choices offering value and options.
You will probably want a core 2 duo CPU, 2GBs of RAM and a dedicated graphics card.

I would say the macbook pro, if you need something extremely fast and reliable, but if you don't need the more expensive computer, if all you need is surfing, chatting, etc. things that don't need lot's of power, get a less pricy computer.
I have a macbook pro, it suits my work needs, and it's just a great home computer.
I would reccomend it to anyone for it's ease of use and power, but if money's an object, get something cheaper.
Hope this helps.
