Can you "dye" or paint carpeting?

We have buff-colored carpeting in our bedroom which is only 5 years old. It is really too light for my taste. It shows dirt too much and stains easily. I have a steam cleaner and clean it frequently, but it never really brightens up, so I thought of somehow dyeing it. Does anyone know how to do this or even if you can? Thanks in advance for any creative answers.

Update:

I should probably clarify...I cannot afford new carpeting, right now. I am very creative and can do many things myself. So I am looking for suggestions on how to do it. We have a waterbed, so I cannot just pick up the carpet and take it somewhere. Any ideas? An area rug on top will not work, cause we cannot remove the bed.

I would call a local carpet dealer and get their recommendations...

or you could buy a large area rug, so that you only see the buff color around the edges...

I think you would need to get it picked up and brought to a company that specializes in that. Look in the phone book for a company that will do the dying and get a quote for that size rug.

Unless it is a very valuable carpet you would probably be better off shopping for a new one. Carpet companies have a lot of sales and some specialize in deals on end-of-roll carpets that won't do a giant area but might be OK for your bedroom size.

I know you cannot paint carpet. I have heard of people dyeing their carpet but i don't think it is a DIY project. If it's not done right you could just get a tye-dyed carpet, not very attactive. my best advice is to live with it until you can afford to replace it.

sorry, bet that's not what you were looking for.

yes, there are companies that specialize in dying carpets. My wife had it done when we lived in Hawaii.
