I don't know about the USA but down here in Aussie it was a holiday to celebrate the cutting back of hours at work..
Labour Day was also called 8 hours Day, as the working day became an 8 hour day as opposed to a 9 hour day...

lmao random
Labor Day is a United States federal holiday that takes place on the first Monday in September. The holiday began in 1882, originating from a desire by the Central Labor Union to create a day off for the "working man". It is still celebrated mainly as a day of rest and marks the symbolic end of summer for many. Labor Day became a federal holiday by Act of Congress in 1894.

No, Labor Day is the day our country established to take it easy and skip work. I don't know if it's a day where we're supposed to celebrate anything other than perhaps the work we do or the job we have. Hope this helps!
God bless!

It's the day my mother went into labor.
But no that's not where the day gets it's name.
It's a day off for 'the working man'.
