You really should quit. Smoking for you, in any way is not good for you. Both my parents smoked, my sister smoked, and they've all had health problems. In fact, my sister was only 40(5 years younger than me), and she recently suffered a heart attack. The doctor told her not only was stress level to blame, but so was the cigarettes. She almost died, but thankfully, she didn't. Now, she's trying to take better care of herself, and she quit smoking!!!! My mom is on oxygen full time, because cigarettes ruined her lungs. My dad had been healthy for a long time, never any major health concerns, but he had also quit smoking and stayed off cigarettes for about 13 years. He went back to smoking, and got sick about 5 years later, started having all kinds of complications. Now, he's not with us anymore.....so, for your own sake and for your family's sake, quit now.

Uh, I can't believe that you have to ask if it's hazardous. Of course it is. So is smoking just 1 cigarette a day and beathing in second-hand smoke.

I've been smoking for a few years longer than you (about 6-9 cigarettes a day) and I'm quitting. I'm down to 2 cigarettes a day. I've been putting off quitting for a couple years but now I have to because my cholesterol level is too high.

Yes. If there is a family history of cancer it is even more hazardous. If you only smoke 5 cigarettes a day it should be easy to quit. I did it. How? I waited until I got the flu and when my throat was sorest and I felt downright awful I went outside and fired up a "cowboy killer" (Marlboro) and it was I imagine like the sensation of sucking on the end of a flamethrower. That is the image I get every time I even contemplate smoking. I smoked 1+ packs per day from 13-44 and have not smoked in almost 6 years now.

Any amount of smoking is bad. In fact, I heard it's no different if you smoke 5 cigs or 25 in a day. Of course, it's what some doctor said.

I smoke about 15 a day. Should quit, though.

Five "sticks" a day is six sticks too many. It is a pity you can't go around the Cancer unit of some big hospital and see those people dying of lung cancer, and other cancers directly related to their tobacco use. The fact that you are 35 and not yet experiencing any of the consequences of this habit is due to your body still being able to compensate for the continual damage going on in your lungs, your arteries, and your body organs. But another ten/twenty years my bet is it will be a very different story, and you will be thinking back and remembering that you "read it here first".

Hi Bryan, it seems to me that you asked the question hoping that people would say that five sticks was acceptable and you shouldn't worry. Not the case, smoking is bad for you, end of story.

The fact that you manage your habit so that you smoke 5 per day still makes you an addict. I say that as an ex smoker of 35 years. I had many failed attempts but with the help of Chantix stopped smoking seven months ago. Best decision I ever made. It is truly wonderful to be free!!

My advice, post another question asking for advice on how to stop and take control of your life again!!

You must quit. You can quit. 5 a day or 2 packs a day, you are damaging your lungs and internal organs, you will get cancer of the throat, lungs, mouth, kidney, liver or whatever. My cancer is related to my smoking. You can quit, set a date in the future, say 2 weeks from now or Sept. 21, 2007. Tell yourself everyday, numerous times during the day, that you are going to quit on Sept. 21 or whatever. Then when that day comes, QUIT ! You can Do it. It will work for you. Believe me.

5 a day is pretty heavy to me. Think about this, people complain about gas prices going up. Why don't they stop smoking so they can pay for their gases?

I am not a smoker but I don't think that 5 cigarettes a day will hurt anything.

It doesn't matter if its 1 a day or 21 a day, it has the same health risk. So yes, you should try and quit. Buy the gum or patch to help you out.
