Why do benighted Cons keep babbling that inflation "skyrocketed" under Carter?
Under Carter, inflation averaged 9.73%, as opposed to 8.23% under Ford, an increase of approximately 18%.
In Clinton's first term, inflation decreased from an average of 4.4% during Bush I to 2.8%, a decrease of approximately 36%.
A) The increase under Carter was well within typical historical ranges of fluctuations between presidential terms.
B) No one is claiming Carter as an economic genius, but the situation he inherited from Ford was abysmal.
C) If you vilify Carter for the slight increase in inflation over the Ford Administration, you have to glorify Clinton for drastically cutting inflation during his administration (at twice the rate that Carter increase it).
Chris:
Those aren't inflation increases per year, they are the inflation rates per year.
Under Ford, the rates were:
5.75%-1976
9.20%-1975
11.03%-1974

Oh dear, they would rather choke than admit Clinton was good for the country. Let alone Carter, probably the one President we ever had who truly lived the Family Values life we hear so much about.

Liberals forget or ignore the facts: The economy grew under Clinton because the nation had the common sense to turn both houses of Congress over to the Republicans in 1994.
Those prosperous last six years "of Clinton" were made so because the smart voters saw deep socialism and a lower standard of living coming if Dems controlled both houses while Clinton and the First Lady Hillary were in power.
Look at the DOW chart for all 1994...drifting sideways. After the Republicans were sworn in, in Jan 1995, it really took off.

I remember Ford rolling out his big anti-inflationary program - which consisted of handing out button that said "WIN" for Whip Inflation Now!
Wow!

Congress has much greater responsibility when it comes to inflation, not the president.
