Can anything be done about excessive sweating?

My 8 year old son sweats loads, his hands and feet will be dripping wet, he doesn't smell but I suppose it will when he's a teenager. His hair is also dripping wet when he wakes up. Can anything be done or does he just have to live with it?

Update:

He sweats during the day also and he's definitely not over weight.

My partner has this, it to do with the with the parasympathetic nervous system. He has wet feet and hands, his face perspires, it doesn't smell at all so don't worry. He got embarrassed about it when he was young, but now he sees it as a sign of someones character- how they react to it shows what sort of person THEY are. He really drips with it!

And botox can help relieve it as the other person said. Chat to the doctor about it, maybe when your son is not around, he will feel self conscious enough. try and make him see its the person that counts

    Hi Clare.

I'd recommend telling your Doctor as there could be lots of medical causes that shouldn't be ignored, before going down the route of Botox or other ways to prevent sweating that are possibly ignoring a physical reason.

Do you take his temperature with a thermometer? Does he have any other symptoms such as excessive thirst or craving for sugar/salt? Does he visit the bathroom a lot, or drink a lot of fluids?

    All the best.

Try letting him sleep with only a sheet. It is possible that he gets night terrors that he doesn't remember, which speed up the heartbeat and cause the body to sweat. Also, limit the amount of water he drinks 2 hours before bed. If there is little water in the body, there is only a small amount of sweat to be produced. Sweating is a sign of hydration. If one is dehydrated, they cannot sweat.

Just try to limit water intake at night, and have him sleep in shorts with a sheet if he gets chilled. If that doesn't work, take him into a psychologist to determine whether he gets night terrors.

I used to get those, and I would wake up crying and screaming and sweating... and you dream hundreds of dreams a night.. its possible he doesnt remember them.

is his hands and feet cold and wet all the time, and does he sweat even when it is not hot? i once saw a tv programme about a girl whoes hands kept sweating, even when it's cold. and the result turned to be that she has something wrong with her nerve system, it was autonomic nerve problem perhaps, i didn't remember clearly. i think you should go to see a doctor who deals with nerve problems. the girl's case was very much like yours. she recovered completely after an operation on her spinal column.

I guess judging the room temp for an individual like your son is difficult . Not much can be done for excessive sweating though.

I think it's something to do with a hormone imbalance...I can't remember the specific details but he might be over producing a certain hormone which causes him to sweat too much...speak to your doctor about it...i'm pretty sure it's a phase though and he will grow out of it.

    I did :)

My sister has this, and no nothing can be except surgery.

But use speed stick or some s hit to stop him from making the odours alot stronger and it should make the sweating cease.

maybe go to the doctors. But on a general note, cut his hair to prevent over heating, and give him anti perspirants. (deodorant) is he over weight? that might help?

botox injection under the armpits, a friend of mine has it done every 6 months

I found that anti pers sparys ect... actually make it worse, just use normal deoderant and its better.
