Is there a way that I can remote into my home pc from work?
I was just trying to figure out if there was a way to remote into my desktop pc from work. (My home is about 20 miles away from my job). I can remote into my home pc using my laptop fine (using Remote Desktop Connection and typing in my computer name/ip address), but I just want to know if it's possible to do it from such a long distance, and if so, how? Thanks for all inputs.

distance won't matter, but your company's firewall may. If you can't get in through rdc, you could try the free version of 'logmein.' Works pretty much anywhere, but you'll have to set up a client on your home system.

When at home, your laptop and desktop are running on the same network behind the security of your wireless router. You also don't have any other network security (i.e. any controls your employer setup). The RemoteDesktopClient (RDP) runs on port 3389, if I remember correctly, and you would need to enable your router to properly forward traffic on that port to your system behind the router. Now this only works if your employer does not block RDP traffic.
FYI - Distance isn't a factor. I work in Maryland and support systems at remote states and even a few in other countries.
My only complaint about RDP so far is that it doesn't handle multiple display systems (we regularly have dual headed systems and I can't do that with a RDP session).

Gotomypc.com offers a service that will let you.
You better check your company's internet/computer use policies first as many companies are looking for reasons to fire employees and reduce expenses.
Your work computer, and the internet access, is paid for by the company and many would look at this as theft if you are not doing work that the company needs you to do.

Symantec PC Anywhere can do it, and over the internet, so you do not need to dial in.
